Does the book also talk about using different algorithmic techniques for a certain problem set and goes to the depth to explain why certain algorithm is best suited for certain tasks? Do you also explain about the Time complexity in Big O notation?

I agree with you, it is about thinking in terms of algorithms, but nevertheless I wanted to find out if the book takes an imperative approach or a functional approach to implement the algorithms!

I'm contemplating using Spark SQL for some of my data needs. I have a Python codebase that uses the Pandas library. I guess if I were to migrate that to a Scala codebase, I need something similiar to Pandas and I guess Spark SQL could be that. Now my question is, can I use Spark SQL without a Spark server? If yes, then I see Spark SQL as an alternative to Pandas. If not can anyone suggest me some good library to work with a Pandas kind of a library in Scala?

I have been reading through some blogs on getting to know myself better on this promising technology. I'm astonished that there is a book already on this. It is interesting.
I had a look at the ToC of this book "The Business Blockchain" but it does not look like a technical book, but rather a very quick overview of what Blockchain is. Is there a reason why this book was kept simple this way? I was expecting some sample applications where I could use Blockchain (using Etherum or IBM's HyperLedger)

The actual server that hosts the WebService expects a SOAP message that contains the security header like:
How to get this along with my SOAP message that gets generated when the request is made? This is what I do in my code to call the WebService:
Any suggestions?

This is a perfect timing. We are containerising our Microservices with Docker as a first step. We want to add redundancy to all our Microservices as a next step. We are looking at all possibilities and this looks interesting thing to do with Kubernetes.
So I have got a couple of questions:
1. Can I create a Master / Slave kind of an architecture with Kubernetes? Say I have Microservice A running as a Docker container. Can I have Kubernetes manage this as a Master and have 2 or 3 other instances as slaves?
2. If the Microservice A is exposing ports, how would this behave with rudundancy? Should I have multiple ports open?

The Scala forum at coderanch is pretty dormant. Recently, I came across a question that does k-reduction on Strings. I decided to give it a try in Scala and here is what I came up with:
What do you guys think? Could it be even simpler while at the same time readable?
So what is String k-reduction?
Given a string consisting of a,b and c's, we can perform the following operation: Take any two adjacent distinct characters and replace it with the third character. For example, if 'a' and 'c' are adjacent, they can replaced with 'b'.
What is the smallest string which can result by applying this operation repeatedly

Could you recommend a reliable NAS device that I could use at home for my Mac, Windows PC? Both these machines are used at home and I might have photos and videos on both these devices. I liked the idea of NAS. So looking for some recommendations for a NAS device.
I think this is what I'm going to do. Get a NAS device, try uploading the contents of my HDD to the NAS device and see if I could recover my contents.

I then want to include this profile file in my .bash_profile. How could I do it? I can of course add everything in my .bash_profile, but the resulting file will be huge to navigate around. So how could I include multiple profile files in my global .bash_profile?

My 13 inch Mac Book Pro non retina that I got in 2012 would not log in anymore. I got some repeated warnings that were showing as a pop up. I do not remember exactly what those warnings are. I wanted to get rid of them, so I tried to restart my machine. After restart, it would not log in or boot anymore. I see a gray screen with a stop sign. I'm not sure what went wrong. I tried to recover my HDD but all in vain. I ended up getting another Mac Book Pro, the non retina model as it was running cheaper and I could expand it like I did with my old Mac by adding more RAM and an SSD drive.
Is there a way to recover the data in my HDD that is on my old Mac? I have 3 years worth of images and videos that I'm afraid of loosing. Any suggestions?

(Go to)

Knute Snortum

SDK stands for "Software Development Kit" and it means nothing more than just a library. You first need to have Java SDK installed on your machine. This Java SDK gives you the Java runtime which is the JVM (Java Virtual Machine) and the Java JDK (Java Development Kit) wich contains libraries to compile your Java programs.
The Amazon SDK is just a library from Amazon that you can use to interface with Amazon services. In comparable terms, it is just like the Java JDK!
If you are completely new to programming and you are interested to learn Java, I would recommend you the Head First Java book! Welcome to Javaranch!
