What does this wildcards error mean?

I am not sure I can understand that, but it doesn't look correct. What do you mean by, “what instance”?

I am going by Ira's response that

you deserialize Moo and cast it to Boo.

If Ira's statement is correct, then readObject() looks in the file to see what type of instance is there and deserializes the instance.
It is independent of the cast which follows.

Good point. I did not realize that.
That means somewhere in the serialized file It says what instance has been serialized and the deserialization is independent of the code used to deserialize it.
Is that assumption correct?

I explicitly deserialized the base class, but why was the derived class member also deserialized?
When the toString() is run on the derived class through polymorphism, we see that the derived class member is present.

What does this wildcards error mean?

I was trying to apply wildcards to a serialization example from Boyarsky and got this confusing error message that I cannot make sense of:

Finally passed the Java 17 developer certification on my second attempt - after 1 year

You need to look at your own situation. Do you really need this Java certification? How about an easier one. How many years of Java experience do you have after college. It is a long and hard certification unless you are a very intelligent person and bright at academics. Furthermore it is not valued that much in the job market I think. Even the people who interview is for jobs I observed, have no clue about many of the topics including Java 8 lambdas and streams.

Oh, maybe a second remark. You might be surprised to learn that not only is declarative programming not "new-fangled", imperative programming isn't the "old-fashioned way" either. But it may appear that way if one mostly uses languages like C and Java.

By programming sideways, I meant the stream pipeline, I wasn't referring to lambdas which are useful in themselves.
I like lambdas and streams when they are used as building blocks like Legos.
But in this case, it is much easier to write and understand when I write vertical code.

Even after (barely ) passing the certification, I wouldn't be able to write the stream pipeline code you wrote above to do the same.
I am certain that most Java developers out there would be unable to either.

It started with our discussion of 'new', '.' and then '[ ]' not in the precedence table.
I wanted to see the precedence between '[ ]' and 'new'.

Isn't that (and streams in general) just a new-fangled way to write a program horizontally, sideways... instead of vertically in the old-fashioned way?
I am sure I can write it with fewer steps and less IQ, the old-fashioned way - vertically down.

Favio Tejada	July 30, 2021	1Z0-819-J 80%	Over the course of a year I spent 20-30 min on a daily basis reading a section of the OCP Java SE Programmer II Study guide by Scott Selikoof & Jeanne Boyarsky, then, once I felt comfortable with the concepts exposed in the syllabus, I spent a couple of weeks doing the Enthuware & WhizLab's mock tests (around 24 tests in total). The actual exam did not look that tricky, by the time I cleared up all the questions I still had 30 minutes left. IMHO the Enthuware mock tests should suffice for anyone who does not have the time to read the study books. I would nonetheless recommend getting familiar with the JavaDocs as this exam is mostly about grasping the APIs.	Bolivia	PIV-SPC

Took the test from home, twice (two attempts). First time, 57%, running out of time with about 5-6 questions left unanswered. It seems that I needed another four weeks to get really confident that I was ready. Used Selikoff and Boyarsky's Complete Study Guide, and Enthuware's practice tests. Also bought Whizlab's practice tests and went through a couple of those. I had a little trouble, especially on the first attempt, with the whiteboard software, so I intended to use a WACOM Intuos tablet to more easily use the whiteboard on the second attempt. The proctor disallowed me from using the tablet, however. My most emphatic recommendation is for Enthuware's practice tests. The Selikoff and Boyarsky book was a worthwhile purchase, as well. Finally passed the Java 17 developer certification on my second attempt - after 1 year
