October 2022 Edition
Howdy from all the CodeRanch staff, and welcome to the October edition of the Journal.

Hopefully this journal will bring a moment of joy in the current nasty times of horible wars and ever increasing prices of energy and food.
There have been some exciting topics in the past month, so here goes:

I n t e r e s t i n g . C o d e R a n c h . F o r u m . T o p i c s

Believe it or not, but the first two items have Monty in common!

And now, for something completely different (our first Monty):
Paul Wheaton, the founder and owner of this site, has just started what he calls 'a kickstarter'. This is a Garden Master course, and you can find the details here:
Master Gardening
Since it is to be expected that we cannot leave our computers running for the whole day anymore (given the prices for electricity), we might as well switch the thing off and go gardening. And if you, like me, are unable to distinguish an oak from a golden daisy, then this course might be precisely what you need!

Our second Monty comes from that famous old Monty Hall puzzle, you know, where someone has a chance to switch doors. And we all know (?) that the chance of winning is two thirds. But that is not what this topic is about. Junilu opened this topic from the point of view of simulating with an emphasize on beautifully refactored code (rumor has it that he is sometimes called 'His Royal Refactorness'). Read the topic and get impressed by how masters in the field can make complicated things look easy! And to add to the fun: in the end there is a slight twist that suggests that the chance is fifty-fifty after all...   Monty 2

And there is the eternal confusion about Upper-bounded wildcards, the nightmare of all those going for the OCPJP! But this topic deals with that subject once and for all, and the OCPJP will be reduced to a formality. Wildcards

A very old topic redivivus! It is about casting an int to a byte. A lively discussion, including quoting from the JLS. I remember once trying to find something in that book and was scared away forever since, contrary to some well-known people among us!   int-to-byte

And finally a topic about final or not. I myself seldomly use final, too lazy for that, but I know of people who use it as much as possible. So, form your own opinion: final or not?

To all the above topic-starters: you are in for a well-deserved cow! And for the mathematiccaly less inclined among us: if you look at Pauls number of cows, you will notice that old truth: infinity + 1 = infinity

We know the date! Note down. Nov 04, 2022 - Nov 05, 2022.

Coderetreats are free day-long, intensive practice events, focusing on the fundamentals of software development and design. By providing developers the opportunity to take part in focused practice, away from the pressures of "getting things done", the coderetreat format has proven itself to be a highly effective means of learning and nurturing software development skills.

All over the world, people are coming together in small communities of practices to learn, explore and grow. Unfortunately, there is no session anywhere close to The Hague, so no GDOC for me this year.

There's a book (or software) promotion just about every week at CodeRanch. Just ask a question in the appropriate forum and you're eligible to win a copy of the book.
This month we had two books that always lead to many a question:

OCP Oracle Certified Professional Java SE 17 Developer Practice Tests: Exam 1Z0-829, click

and

Groking Functional Programming click, where there is even a question about what Groking is, since it is not in Google Translate.

We have several forums dedicated to talk about books. Here are some interesting reviews and recommendations from the CodeRanch staff in our Book Reviews forum.

The Book Review Grid will give you an overview.

Piet Souris, and as we all know, Souris is the French word for Mouse (Muis in Dutch, Maus in German). A retired actuary, so fond of all things statistics and trying to create a house of cards in css. And believe it or not, that requires a lot of goniometry, you know, sines and cosines and the like. I can imagine that some people prefer Pauls gardenig course above this css-thing. Anyway, for the upcominhg month: have fun and keep them coming, all those interesting question!
