September 2022 Edition
Howdy from all the CodeRanch staff, and welcome to the September edition of the Journal.

Long before I created CodeRanch, I grew a garden, became obsessed with gardening, and then took a master gardener course.  Years passed and I became bonkers about permaculture and felt a powerful need to have a master gardener course that cut out the required toxic gick in the course and replaced it with cool permaculture and organic stuff. Presto! - Paul Wheaton

We know the date! Note down. Nov 04, 2022 - Nov 05, 2022.

Coderetreats are free day-long, intensive practice events, focusing on the fundamentals of software development and design. By providing developers the opportunity to take part in focused practice, away from the pressures of "getting things done", the coderetreat format has proven itself to be a highly effective means of learning and nurturing software development skills.

All over the world, people are coming together in small communities of practices to learn, explore and grow.

  • How did this thread turn into a discussion of pair programming?
  • Campbell doesn't start threads often, only maybe when he's on a book hunt. Except this time, it got all very interesting. I don't think it is too late to chime in.

  • Certainly is not an easy topic to grasp, and everything what's around it. Yes, Java Generics.
  • Some top notch Ranch members discussing a ways of doing it. What it seems to be, a hot discussion currently going on there is about the method signature.

  • Curious as to what looks cleaner?
  • Such topics always get some spark, simply because we all care about our code, don't we? Some members of the CodeRanch could spend hours discussing a variable name, which one is better, and that is great! Because not always we have such luxury at work. Question is, should we? Balance is important here, not to get stuck for too long. Perfect is good, but done is better. Read the thread, and see how decisions are made, which approach is better.

  • Is JavaFX still worth learning?
  • It isn't easy to answer. And the answer may vary depending on your goal. It is always nice to see something visual, especially if it is working. When you starting out, that's even more encouraging. More about JavaFX technology.
