Lesson Descriptions Domain 1, “Mobile Devices,” makes up 14% of the A+ Core 1 (220-1001) exam. It contains objectives concerning laptops, smartphones, and tablets and focuses mostly on hardware, connectivity, and synchronization. The first three lessons in this domain deal with laptops, including hardware and upgrading RAM and the hard drive. Laptop displays, webcams, and other features are also covered in the first half of this domain. The remaining four lessons cover the basics about tablets and smartphones and show how to connect and configure those devices. Mobile networking and wireless technologies are covered, and the domain finishes with a brief talk about mobile device synchronization.

Domain 2, “Networking,” makes up 20% of the exam and is broken down into eight lessons, which begin with ports and protocols. The lessons then moves on to network devices and focuses on SOHO networks. Wireless networking protocols and networked hosts, including the various types of servers, are covered next. Network configuration, TCP/IP, network types, and networking tools are also explained.

Domain 3, “Hardware,” is all about the internal components that make up a PC and the external devices that a PC utilizes, including monitors, printers, keyboards, and mice. It makes up 27% of the exam and is composed of 13 lessons in this course. During these 13 lessons, the various components and devices are discussed in depth, as well as 2 hands-on demonstrations showing how to build two computers step by step. The lessons start with cable types and connectors, for the PC and for networking connections. Then the core of the computer–the motherboard, CPU, and RAM, which make up the brains of the outfit–are covered. Hard drives are covered in depth, followed by peripherals and power supplies. The end of this domain discusses custom PC configurations and printers.

Domain 4, “Virtualization and Cloud Computing,” makes up 12% of the exam, which includes basic cloud computing concepts and client-side virtualization. Some server-side virtualization is also discussed, though it’s not mandatory for the exam.

Domain 5, “Hardware and Network Troubleshooting,” is arguably the most important domain in the exam and makes up 27%. It starts with the CompTIA six-step troubleshooting methodology and applies it to the rest of the course. Important concepts such as ESD prevention, testing tools, how to troubleshoot desktop and mobile systems, hard drive troubleshooting, and how to solve problems related to video and printers, plus wired and wireless network troubleshooting, are covered.
