ISACA Now: What inspired you to pursue a career in the security field?

My journey into cybersecurity began not as a deliberate career path but as a fascination with the evolving challenges of digital security. Before cybersecurity was recognized as a distinct field, I found myself captivated by the intricacies of digital vulnerabilities. My initial forays involved demonstrating security flaws at tech conferences. It was there, amidst the growing curiosity of how organizations could shield themselves from cyberthreats, that my passion was ignited. I was driven by a profound desire to fortify the digital frontiers of organizations against the surge of cyberattacks. This mission transformed from a mere interest into a lifelong dedication, shaping my career into teaching, consulting and leading teams united by the same commitment to safeguard our digital infrastructure.

ISACA Now: What comes to mind when you think about the name of this award, Technology for Humanity?

The phrase “Technology for Humanity” encapsulates the dual nature of our digital era—it's our greatest asset yet simultaneously our most significant vulnerability. In today’s world, technology is as essential as the air we breathe, seamlessly integrated into every aspect of our daily lives. Yet, this integration brings with it the shadow of cyberthreats. The essence of “Technology for Humanity” lies in making cybersecurity not just accessible but fundamental to everyone. It heralds a call to recognize and support the guardians of our digital existence, ensuring that technology continues to serve as a beacon of progress, not a point of failure.

ISACA Now: How have you gone about your efforts to support the next generation of cybersecurity professionals?

Entering the cybersecurity field, I was struck by its lack of diversity and the stark talent shortage. My drive extended beyond protecting our digital infrastructure; it was about opening the field to a rich tapestry of individuals, fostering a culture of inclusivity and diversity. Facing the solitude of being often the only woman and person of mixed race in professional spaces, I was determined to change this narrative. Through scholarships, mentorship and creating opportunities for individuals from varied backgrounds, I aimed to redefine the cybersecurity landscape. By organizing conferences with diverse lineups and collaborating with universities on research projects, I aspired to create a welcoming and equal-opportunity domain in cybersecurity, encouraging the next generation to join a field where diversity is not just accepted but celebrated.

ISACA Now: How would you characterize the energy and passion you’ve observed around the SheLeadsTech program?

The SheLeadsTech program is a beacon of hope and inspiration. It’s a testament to the collective will to address the talent shortfall in cybersecurity by embracing diversity. The enthusiasm that both men and women in the ISACA chapters have shown for the program is heartening. It’s not just about discussions or education; it’s a vibrant movement toward understanding and action, emphasizing the critical role of diverse talents in enriching our profession. The support for SheLeadsTech exemplifies the power of community in fostering a more inclusive, equitable and secure digital future.

ISACA Now: What does winning this award and being part of the ISACA community generally mean to you?

Winning this award is more than an accolade; it’s a recognition of a shared vision for a safer world, making it profoundly meaningful. The ISACA community represents more than just a professional network; it’s a tribe, a source of inspiration, support and opportunities. My involvement has offered invaluable career support, leadership development and a sense of belonging in a global community. Leading volunteer-driven events has honed my leadership skills, underscoring the belief that active participation in such communities rewards you manifold, offering career advancement, skill development and lasting friendships. This award and my journey with ISACA affirm my commitment to making a difference in the world of cybersecurity.
