ISACA is very excited to share four new resources with the CMMI community and new CMMI customers and adopters.

CMMI remains relevant and required in many United States Department of Defense (DoD) and federal contracts (contrary to some misinformation), with life of contract value around US$1.7T – and yes, that’s a “T” for Trillions! And that’s just the US alone. There are similar requirements for CMMI across the globe, including in India, China and Mexico/South America.

  1. CMMI Acquisition HandbookThe CMMI Acquisition Handbook provides guidance for addressing and verifying CMMI requirements in government contracts and acquisition efforts. The targeted audience for this handbook includes any contracting organization that is acquiring products and services based on Capability Maturity Model Integration (CMMI) best practices model. Topics include:
    • What is CMMI/Why Use CMMI?
    • Requirements for Request for Proposals
    • CMMI Performance Data Overview
    • Comprehensive List of Online Resources for Acquisition Officers
    • Gansler Memo

This resource was requested by members of the DoD Acquisition community to help convey the value of CMMI in Defense and Federal contracts, and to debunk some of the misinformation and misperceptions about CMMI being required in federal and other contracts. It is a very short, but powerful handbook – five pages of core material – to provide acquisition and procurement teams with the information they need to know when requiring or verifying CMMI in their contracts.

The next two related pieces are based on the CMMI Technical Report: Performance Results – reflecting CMMI appraisal results from January 2019 through December of 2022. A whopping 84 percent of over 33,000 business-critical performance objectives are being consistently achieved by the organizations adopting CMMI to build and improve their capability and performance.

It is important to note that these performance results are reviewed, analyzed and independently validated against each awarded CMMI Maturity or Capability Level for every CMMI Benchmark appraisal to confirm their performance results match the Maturity Level expectations end-users have for companies who adopt the CMMI.

Think of these other two pieces as executive summary-level materials and key point summaries of the more detailed Technical Report. All three demonstrate the value and performance results being achieved across the world by organizations adopting CMMI Performance Solutions.

  1. CMMI By the NumbersHow Companies Worldwide Are Improving Performance: a guide that serves as an executive summary of the CMMI Technical Report. This data-driven resource offers valuable summary level insights into how organizations have achieved consistent performance results success through CMMI adoption.
  2. The ROI of CMMI: Data Insights on Performance Improvement Infographic (companion piece to CMMI by the Numbers): highlights key metrics and the value CMMI delivers to end-user organizations

Lastly, this next one is basically a CMMI 101 primer and is a great resource for organizations new to adopting CMMI, or to those explaining all the basics of the CMMI Performance Solutions ecosystem.

CMMI V3.0 is getting a lot of attention and buzz around the world, and we are excited to see how organizations continue to adopt different aspects of the Model – now with a total of eight domains: Development, Services, Security, Data Management, Supplier Management, Safety, People Management, and Virtual Work. Since we started accepting CMMI V2.0 appraisals in 2019, we have seen over 2,000 percent growth in multi-domain appraisals, and we are seeing other government programs such as FedRAMP and CMMC look to CMMI for helping to provide a “leg-up,” or running start, to addressing their requirements as well.

CMMI has never been more relevant or as effective in helping small, medium-, and large organizations across many industries more rapidly and effectively build capability and improve their performance. We can’t wait to see what the next several years of adoption shows!
