Editor’s note: ISACA’s annual CommunITy Day of global volunteering is set for 1st October 2022. Find out more about CommunITy Day and how to participate locally here. Below, Faith Wawira with the ISACA Kenya Chapter describes how she and her fellow chapter members are planning to make a local impact this year.

On 1 October, the ISACA Kenya Chapter will join the ISACA Global community in the fourth annual worldwide day of volunteerism for ISACA CommunITy Day. This year, with the lift of COVID-19 restrictions, Kenya chapter members’ families and friends will make a difference by re-visiting three children’s homes: Young Life Africa Children's Home, Compassionate Hands for the Disabled Foundation and Heritage of Faith and Hope Children’s Home. The participants will either be visiting the homes in person or/and contributing donations.

Young Life Africa Children's Home
Young Life Africa Children’s Home focuses on boys’ empowerment. This home targets orphans and vulnerable children from underprivileged areas in society. Their mission is to rescue, rehabilitate, accommodate, educate and feed orphans and vulnerable children from society, targeting young boys from 5 to 18 years. They promote disciplined education through multi-skilling and competence-based learning. They accomplish this by focusing on empowering and educating the young orphaned and underprivileged boys in areas of STEM, creative work, sports, agriculture and more.

The home’s immediate needs include mentorship, reading materials, library books, computer room and art room supplies, internet service, and used IT equipment (old desktop printers, cameras, networking tools, computer and mobile repair tools).

In the long term, the ISACA Kenya Chapter, through the One In Tech foundation, is looking forward to providing mentorship, especially in the areas of technology and innovation in collaboration with our various partners.

Compassionate Hands for the Disabled Foundation
Compassionate Hands for the Disabled Foundation focuses on orphans and other vulnerable children with mental and/or physical disabilities. Their mission is to accommodate children with special needs and empower them economically, socially and spiritually to overcome limitations stemming from their disability. Their immediate needs include quality shelter, medication, diapers, dry foods, fruits and vegetables.

The more than 100 children in this home come from diverse backgrounds and cultures. They have experienced stigmas and discrimination against their mental and/or physical disabilities. There are some cases of rescued children who never saw the light of day as their parents were either afraid or embarrassed to socialize them publicly. These vulnerable children need therapy, medical support, schooling and an environment where they can thrive.

Heritage of Faith and Hope Children’s Home
The Heritage of Faith and Hope Children’s Home mission is to transform the lives of orphans and vulnerable children through care, providing quality education and providing spiritual guidance. Their vision is to be a comprehensive care, protection, empowerment and transformation children/youth center.

Heritage of Faith and Hope Children’s Home invites people of good will to come forward and partner with their vision, which entails giving home and hope to orphans and vulnerable children by transforming their lives through love, care, protection and, above all, giving them quality education, which will enable them to be self-reliant in the future.
