With 4 or 8Gb of memory, strange, not 16Gb ...

I'm disappointed to not see a 16g version!

I do wonder if plug-in RAM extension may eventually come to the Pi. The lower-end Pi 4 wasn't a very good desktop because although it had the CPU power, its lack of RAM meant that running a web browser could cause it to go into virtual memory thrashing.

At the other extreme, though, I'd really like to see the Pi 3 live on. The Pi 4 is powerful, but it also demands (electrical) power. An awful lot of fun things can be done perfectly well with a Pi 3. Less amperage, and rarely needs extra cooling. I have a client in Eastern Europe who loves the basic Pi, because that's all he needs to make his products work.

looks like for GPU yes, for RAM is not clear yet.
fingers crossed that they will release a 16G or with luck 32 hahaha

@Igor: just a challenge... desolder the memory chip and replace with another one yourself ;-)

why not a Hat where you can add your on DDR memory?
that's is a nice idea!

No. The hat pins are GPIO pins, not memory bus pins.

You can attach external memory using GPIO (for example, via SPI), but you cannot address it directly in code. You have to treat it more like disk I/O requests.

Sorry about the delayed response. Yesterday I was having problems with the Ranch.

Is anyone still buying (or even able to find) Pis at a reasonable price anymore? I know they SAY it's starting at $60, but for the last few years the prices have been ridiculous. And I thought people were moving on to other cheaper copycat brands which are basically the same for half the price.

The Pi has become available again in the past few months. I believe that some of the shopping sites I frequent have posted availability of at least the Pi 4 at its nominal price instead of pandemic gouge-pricing.

Bear in mind that the original $35 Pi 4 is at the bottom of its line and mostly just good for utility machines. The larger-memory Pi 4 models were always more expensive, bit with 8GB, make a decent desktop without being killed by memory thrashing.

The Pi 5 is a different beast really. While software-compatible with earlier Pi models, it is significantly more powerful as well. So it does carry a higher base price.

It also demands more electrical power to run, so while it's definitely shaping up to be a compact desktop computer or server, I hope that the more electrically frugal models will continue to be produced as well.

With a little knowledge, a cast iron skillet is non-stick and lasts a lifetime.
