Frank,
First, thanks for being here. I'm a long-time Java developer who saw a great demo of six Raspberry Pi Zero Ws running multiple instances of a Java app using Docker and Kubernetes. It looked really interesting so I went out and bought six Pi Zeroe Ws, 32GB RAM cards for them, and a 300MBps wireless router to connect them all, but I have no idea how to make it all work. Do you know how to hook them up?

Either way, I'd like to be able to get some experience running Java-based applications and microservices on them. Do you have a recommendation on whether to go with something like Micronaut to reduce the size and startup time or would you recommend something else?

Thanks,
Burk

Hi Burk multiple questions here... ;-)

1/ Raspberry Pi cluster: that's on my wishlist for a long time, but because of the stock problems I wasn't able to buy extra boards to start experimenting myself.

Some interesting reads here:
https://microk8s.io/
https://ubuntu.com/tutorials/how-to-kubernetes-cluster-on-raspberry-pi#1-overview

This is the board I wanted to buy for cluster-experiments:
https://turingpi.com/product/turing-pi-2/

2/ Micronaut is an option, but just pick whatever you already know or want to learn... If you want fast startup times, CRaC is also a good idea!

Have fun experimenting!

Hi Burke,

I think that the most amazing thing about your experiment was that you were able to obtain so many Pi Zero's! Those things were hard to get hild of even before The Great Pi shortage.

Just to be sure: that project was for Pi Zero and not the Pi Compute nodes? And could you provide a link to the demo that got you so excited?

Also, Welcome, Frank! I've been working mostly in the Pi and AVR space for the last few years and having a lot of fun there. Mostly programming in Python and C, the last major Java app I ran was too slow, but that was probably a Pi 2 and I don't know how well the author had tuned it.

Again, Welcome!

@Burk Hufnagel:

check out microk8s and K3s, there are lots of cluster tutorial.
For Kubernetes I suggest using PI4 with 8g.

You can check this out, but for docker or kubernets you will need a more powerful board.

Lets hope to see the new Raspberry Pi with 16g soon!

My journey started a year or so before Covid, I made many trips to local computer stores, buying one or two at a time when they were on sale.

They're all Pi Zero W (wifi) and the demo was at work, but I found something similar on YouTube at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qSpfWP-Fgjc.
