You can position yourself as a leader without managing people. The mindset of always learning and a growth mindset is vital to keep your skills current and up to date. Remember that you do not need to take a management position to be a leader. This is vital to understand. You can be a leader without going into the management track (while management can be a fulfilling path, it is not for everyone). Learning, sharing and participating with others in your community or employer can help you to not only learn and practice new skills, but position you as a leader and lead you to greater fulfillment and joy in your learning process. There are many examples and interviews with stories from developers doing this and practicing this in their careers.
