So, tomorrow (Feb 14th) is Valentine's Day. Do you do anything for the one you love for Valentine's Day?

I don't have a wife or girlfriend, but my best friend is a girl and I sent her this bouquet of flowers. She liked it.

February 14 is also Tet this year (aka Lunar or Chinese New Year). I just married a Vietnamese woman, so it's going to be a busy day!

I have a question related to this thread.

I am in the states. How can I make american female friends or any friends in general? I have few in my office but they are more like colleagues than friends. We never communicate other than office time. The main hurdle I see is lack of topics that can be discussed. How do you start the discussion? Where do they like to hangout in weekend time? What are their general like/dislike? What kind of cheesy thing do they for just time pass? Any input?

Seriously? You expect to be able to lump every woman in the U.S.A. into one simple, well defined category?

I honestly think that the answer to each of these questions is going to be "it is different for each and every woman on the planet".

My suggestion would be to not try. Don't TRY to meet them. Do things you like? Enjoy reading - join a book club. Like fishing? find a local pond or lake where you can go. Are you religious? Join a group at your place of worship.

There are hundreds of places you can volunteer - Habitat for Humannity, the Red Cross, etc.

Go to a park and ride a bike. Go to the mall and shop in stores you like. The harder you TRY to meet someone, the less likely you will.

There are only two hard things in computer science: cache invalidation, naming things, and off-by-one errors

In an office is a terrible place to make friends.

Join something that you want to do. Any hobby, model railroads, hacker spaces.

Horse riding, etc.

You are unlikely to make "friends" in a bar. You may get lucky, but that is another thread.

OK. I got the point here.

Still my question stands here. I am not american. So I think the way american boy/girl thinks/behaves differently about/to non american boy/girl. Like it is a kind of feeling I would be having back in my country if I see somebody other than native. How do I feel this gap? I have to get into their culture/way of thinking/like/dislike.

I will try what you guys have suggested.

I assume you meant to fill the gap, not feel it.

I'm not sure you can, at least quickly. Human cultures span generations. Things change slowly.

perhaps you should look for other ex-pats and join their clubs? It won't help assimilation, but it might find you some friends with common culture.
