Practical Debugging at Scale: Cloud Native Debugging in Kubernetes and Production

A very warm welcome, Shai Almog and congratulations for your new book on debugging in Kubernetes.

I am sure this would be a hot seller as Kubernetes and containers, in general, gain further adoption.

I had a couple of questions from the topic of this book

Given that debugging is a core skill for any developer, how did your approach towards debugging change when transitioning towards a containerized environment and what were the primary factors that influenced the same?

Does your book focus solely on Kubernetes or the concepts described therein are applicable to other containers as well, in a general sense?

Great question.
Despite the essential nature of debugging most of us didn't learn debugging anywhere. Not officially. There are very few books and very few university courses related to that. The book covers the breadth of debugging. It starts with the foundation. Features in the debugger many developers aren't aware of e.g. Object Marking, jump to line, entry renderers, etc. They are so rarely used some debuggers don't even include these features.

The first part of the book deals with these basics e.g. the core theory behind debugging. How we can make our code easier to debug? What debugging tools are there?

The second part talks about the issues of scale and production. It discusses Kubernetes, Serverless & Observability.

The third part discusses the practicality of using the concepts introduced in the first parts in the book. How to use debuggers to learn new code bases? How to deal with security issues etc.

I think that what I cover is everything that we never learned. We were expected to pick this on our job. This is about rounding out that missing knowledge.
