Text Block Incidental and Essential whitespace confusion

Hi,

I am confuse about how we can figure out which space is incidental and which one is essential in text block?

I was going through Java SE 17 Developer certification guide book. As mentioned in book, "Imagine a vertical line drawn on the leftmost non-whitespace character in your text
block. Everything to the left of it is incidental whitespace, and everything to the right is essential whitespace." But same is not working with my code.

String v = """
                   Fing
                       Thom
               """;

Output -
   Fing
       Thom

Expected - The whitespace in front of Fing should have been incidental whitespace, right ?

I am moving you because that question is too difficult for a “beginning” forum.
Let's add Code Tags (please always use them) to a copy of your code, so we can see the structure of what you wrote.Remember that the definitive guide is the Java® Language Specification (=JLS). That tells you that the whitespace is stripped by the same algorithm as String#stripIndent(). Have a look at that method; the rules are too complicated to copy.
I tried your code on JShell and this is what happened (converted to monospaced font).

jshell> String v = """
  ...>                    Fing
  ...>                        Thom
  ...>                """;
v ==> "    Fing\n        Thom\n"

jshell> System.out.println(v);
    Fing
        Thom

So in this case it's not the leading whitespace of the "Fing" line, but of the closing line that is used as incidental whitespace.

There is obviously a newline after Thom, which is why there is no space following it. Any whitespace preceding """ in line 4 is obviously incidental. But that should all be explained by the String method link I posted earlier.
