One solution could be, to match the input from a command line app one digit at a time - like this one:

*Please* stop providing complete solutions.

I've refrained from removing them from the posts here that contain them, although another bartender might not.

It was far from a complete solution, and offered only an idea of where to start.....

To the people who tried to help thank you..

Sometimes text books offer partial or even complete solutions to problems for students to understand.
I in no way wanted my assignment done for me...but just a little help.
I will no longer use this site nor recommend it to anyone else.

It wasn't "far from complete" at all, otherwise nobody would have said anything.

We have a pretty strict ethos when it comes to how to answer questions, and we're not a textbook: we're a resource to help people learn how to think (IMO, I don't speak for JavaRanch). Sorry to see you go, although I guess you won't read this.

Shocking - what word are left

His assignment was more complex then the simple code it posted - I 'just' gave him some input to how he could enter the digits from a command line. The match part was far from what he was told to do - and it was 'just' his own if statement rewritten.

It anyone can show me the code where I gave him 'too much code' - please do.

Rather than give direct answers we tend to provide pointers to learning materials, particularly when it's clearly a homework/learning assignment.

Feel free to curse all you want (with emoticons, anyway), although I generally reserve "shocking" for things that are *actually* shocking, and reserve anger for things more worthy than this. YMMV.

I think we are overreacting. Maybe I shouldn't have deleted the text; in which case I am sorry. Probably too late now however.

Speaking of overreacting....

Campbell, I think you are safe in the overreacting category.

Cutter, why are you taking such offense? The moderation wasn't even against you.

Rene,

I have not looked at the code posted, nor do I want to get into this debate.

Regardless, this much is clear. Any moderation was *not* intended to be offensive. And if we have, we apologize.

Contributors are important to the Ranch. And I guess you got moderated for "possibly contributing too much". Of the many things that users get moderated for, this is definitely "top of the list" of something we don't want to offend the user, in moderating.

Transferred from Beginning Java here to allow any discussion about deleting text. Those parts of the post which refer to the original question, rather than any deletions, have been removed; the original thread will have them in.

So ... let me see if I understand what is going on ...

OP asked for help.

Rene provided some code in an effort to help the OP understand.

An unpaid, volunteer moderator looked at it and thought it was too much, trimmed it a bit, and, rather than just being quiet (like I would have done) decided to be up front and let folks know that it either crossed the border or was too close to the border.

Folks then want to call into question my policies on what is "too helpful" and the unpaid volunteer's judgement on this.

And these folks really have no idea where I stand on this because I've only expressed it privately to staff.

So ... while I have a lot of things to say about all of this, I think I'm gonna stick to just one:

The moderator is aware of my evil plot for world domination and is doing his best to follow my wicked orders. I suppose it could be debatable about whether it would further my plans if he left it alone, but .... it seems pretty borderline. Heaps of borderline stuff comes up several times a day every day. If I were to put each unpaid, volunteer moderator on trial for each borderline case, I think the whole site would go to hell mighty quick. Plus, it would take a lot of time away from my greater evil plot for world domination.

So here is what I would like to see happen: the folks that are upset say "damn. that sucks. I guess I'll try again but in a way less likely to get deleted by the unpaid, volunteer moderator with whom I do not agree."

Did I mention "unpaid" and "volunteer"?

I think the "unpaid" and "volunteer" thing gives one a lot of license to be trying to make the best of things without having to be held terribly accountable.

Iteratively yours,

Paul Wheaton
