I am confused about a couple of things here:
  • How does what is being proposed in this post differ from having this forum?

  • I haven't really understood these requests in the past, so I am genuinely curious as to what members perceive as being missing from the forums - perhaps this is an opportunity for us to improve functionality on this site.

The one big area that online forums can't beat is physical interaction - everyone sitting in a room together and going through a particular section of a book. But since nobody is talking about where they are in the world, this seems unlikely.

I think online chatting gives you the potential of an immediate response to a question, but relies on the other people being online, and one of them knowing the answer. In my opinion the forum beats this hands down - you don't get an immediate response, but you have a far greater chance of having lots of people look at the question rather than the few people who are online in a chat room.

So there must be something else that I am missing from this proposition. Can someone enlighten me?

  • Those of you posting email addresses in this topic - are you aware that this site is crawled by Google, so you are now making your email addresses publicly visible? Which then gives you a greater chance of getting spam?

  • Why not use the PM function to send a private message (that won't be searched by Google) to the original poster and give them your email in that?

    Regards, Andrew

    I am joining too.
Has Anybody got some schedule guideline for this group of people?

    Hi All,

I am new to this forum. And I am thinking about taking the SCEA soon. So I'd love to join a group like this one to encourage each other. But at the same time I agree with Andrew Monkhouse for not publishing our email. He mentioned using PM instead. can anyone tell me what is PM and how can I use it?
As for the SCEA, please let me know how are you planning to do it, and what is the schedule and at what time you are planning to meet online? I suggest to come up with a plan of topics we have to study with a timeframe of each one.
    Thanks.

Welcome to JavaRanch and this forum. We don't have many rules here, but one we do have is that your display name must meet the requirements of the JavaRanch official policy on registered names. In particular, the display name must have a first name and a last name (although the first name can be just an initial), and must be a valid name. You can change your display name here.

A private message (PM) is a direct communication that can only be seen by the person you are sending the PM to. Private messages can be accessed in the My Profile section. Individual members may elect not to receive PMs. It is also possible to set up your profile such that any PM sent to you is automatically forwarded to your email address. To send a PM to a person, click on the button that appears at the top of that person's post.

As a general rule we recommend members use the forum rather than email or PMs. In this instance (swapping contact details), it may be preferable.

I am still confused as to what people think this study group will give them that the forum doesn't provide.

    Regards, Andrew

Thanks Andrew for your reply, I corrected my displayed name as you can see!.
And as for your question, One positive thing I can see in such group, is a group of people that have the same starting point in getting prepared for the exam, which encourage and push ppl to do more. of course the saloon website will be one of information resource.
