A lot of people think Wi-Fi is easy. You plug in a router with Wi-Fi built-in at home and it just works. Most of the time. Why does it have to be so hard in the enterprise? Like many things IT, it’s really about scale and understanding fundamentals. Wi-Fi is very forgiving and often works reasonably well when deployed poorly, but once usage ramps up the problems start. Perhaps a new device comes out and things suddenly don’t work well for that device. To help you learn to properly deploy Wi-Fi and understand the fundamentals, I’m suggesting some resources that will get you started on your Wi-Fi journey.

Certifications

Since I teach Ekahau ECSE courses, I have to start by suggesting that path. We teach three different Wi-Fi courses:

  • ECSE Design, which is focused on how to design good Wi-Fi using Ekahau AI Pro.
  • ECSE Troubleshooting, which is focused on understanding how Wi-Fi works and using Ekahau tools and Wireshark to figure out what’s going on. This is a brand new version of the troubleshooting course.
  • ECSE Advanced, which is an advanced course on using Ekahau tools. This has ECSE Design certification as a prerequisite, so it’s probably not applicable if you are just getting started.

Both the troubleshooting and design courses are great ways to learn how Wi-Fi works and while they are focussed on Ekahau tools, the knowledge of how Wi-Fi works is valuable and can still be helpful even if you aren’t an active user of Ekahau products.

There’s always hardware vendor training, but I would recommend looking into the Certified Wireless Network Administrator (CWNA) certification from CWNP as your first choice. The CWNP certifications are vendor-neutral and will not necessarily teach you to configure or design a Cisco or Aruba WLAN, per se. They will, however, teach you how Wi-Fi works. If you go down the CWNA path you will understand the 802.11 protocol and what most of the myriad of dials, switches, and knobs available for configuring your wireless gear actually do. You’ll understand how clients and APs (Access Points) interact with each other and you will be able to make much better decisions on how to deploy wireless networks. If you pursue the CWNA certification before you pursue hardware vendor certifications, you’ll find them a lot easier because you will understand the RF and Wi-Fi fundamentals already.

Juniper Mist has a lot of great free content that anyone can learn from just by signing up for a free account. Go to the Mist management portal, sign up for a free account, then click on the courses button after you login. Lots of great content there. If you are an actual Mist AI user, there’s the great Juniper Mist AI Networks course which spends a good amount of time on understanding Wi-Fi before getting into the details of managing a Mist network. Full disclosure: I occasionally teach that one, too.

For Aruba users the place to start would be the Aruba Certified Mobility Associate (ACMA). This teaches some RF basics, but is mostly how to configure a small Aruba WLAN. Unless you need to learn Aruba specifically right away, I think doing the CWNA first would be a better path.

For Cisco, there isn’t really an entry-level wireless certification. The CCNA touches on it, but things don’t focus on Wi-Fi until you get to the professional level. There are two CCNP concentration courses (and associated exams), Designing Cisco Enterprise Wireless Networks and Implementing Cisco Enterprise Wireless Networks. The names are pretty self-explanatory and are a good option if you are a Cisco user.

Podcasts

If you are a fan of podcasts, you can learn a lot from these podcasts:

  • Wireless LAN Professionals – A long-running podcast that is run by Keith Parsons, one of the most recognizable names in Wi-Fi.
  • Clear to Send – A weekly podcast that is hosted by a pair of Cisco Champions and includes a nice mix of beginning and advanced topics.
  • Wi-Fi for Beginners – A 21-episode series that is just what it sounds like, Wi-Fi for beginners!

Videos

I hope you like watching videos because there is a lot of video content available!

  • Cisco Live On-Demand Library – The Cisco Live site has a lot of videos. A lot. If you expand the Technology menu on the left, choose Wireless and it’ll limit the videos to those most applicable to wireless. The sessions you are mostly looking for will start with BRKEWN. Sessions regarding ISE will be listed under the BRKSEC category.
  • WLAN Professionals Youtube Channel – Wireless LAN professionals host a couple of WLAN focussed conferences every year and all the talks are recorded and posted for free viewing. Tends towards more advanced content, but this resource amounts to an epic knowledge dump from professionals across the WLAN industry. Highly recommended.

Conferences

  • WLPC – The Wireless LAN Professionals Conference is the source for the Youtube channel I mentioned earlier. While all the videos are posted, it’s nothing compared to being there. Before the conference, there are 3-day classes available and during the conference, there is a choice of Deep Dives where you’ll have the chance to spend several hours diving into one of the available topics. Really, really good.
  • Aruba Atmosphere – I haven’t been able to attend this, yet. However, those who I know that have attended think highly of this conference and the content in it. The focus is on Aruba gear, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t straight-up Wi-Fi knowledge to be gained.
  • Cisco Live – If you use Cisco, this is the place to get your questions answered and learn all about the latest and greatest stuff. Wireless is a relatively small part of the content, but it is there and growing every year. There’s a TON of other Cisco content covering every area of technology there, as well.

The IEEE Standard

The last resource I’ll mention for those who really want to dive deep or have a hard time sleeping at night is the 802.11 Standard that defines the protocols for Wi-Fi. Updates to the standard are available for free after they have been released for 6 months via the IEEE Get program. Just click on the “Access via the IEEE Get program” link to download over 3500 pages of this standard.

That’s a lot of resources to help you get going! If you have others to recommend, please reply to this post so others can see your favorite resources. In the meantime, have fun diving into Wi-Fi. As you may be able to tell, it’s one of my favorite things!

[NOTE: This is no longer necessary. Zoom has fixed this functionality.]

All the virtual conferencing solutions have become critical to the operations of many business. In my case, I am using Zoom to deliver classes virtually that would have been taught in person in the past. I’m actually using pretty much every available conferencing platform based on what my customers choose, but Zoom is my primary tool.

A sample of Ecamm Live in use.

For some use cases, using tools such as OBS or Ecamm Live to process your video prior to sending it. These tools create a virtual camera. Virtual cameras look like a webcam but are actually a pre-processed video feed from a software tool. This tools allow you to up your production quality for some use cases. For example, you can:

  • add watermarks/brandmarks to your video
  • easily set up multi-camera configurations with nice transitions between them
  • add a “floating head” over a shared screen
  • give your video a lower-third graphic (that’s what you call those things at the bottom of the screen that say who you are)

So, let’s say you are a macOS user and use Zoom. You may have noticed that the current versions of Zoom do not give your virtual camera as an available video input option. I don’t know that I have the technical details exactly correct, but it basically has to do with macOS security features that prevent a signed binary from accessing third-party libraries. The issues with virtual cameras started as soon as Zoom began signing their binary. For now, the workaround is to remove the signature, which permits Zoom to access the third-party libraries needed for the virtual camera.

Remove the Signature to Restore Virtual Cameras

To remove the signature you need exit Zoom and run the command below in a Terminal window.

codesign --remove-signature /Applications/zoom.us.app/

After removing the signature you will need to re-grant security permissions when you next start Zoom. This means microphone, camera, and screen recording permissions. You will also need to remove the signature again every time you upgrade.

That’s it. You should now see your virtual camera in Zoom.

Clearly, I need to start blogging again because my last blog post was this list for last year! That said, it’s a tradition here at Mostly Networks to run the unofficial Twitter attendee list for the US edition of the WLPC conference. WLPC registration is open until Jan 15th, 2020, but you should register earlier before the conference fills. We will be at a fantastic new location this year and it’s promising to be the biggest WLPC, yet!

Anyway, I hope you find the list useful. It won’t be updated in real-time, but it will be updated as long as people keep adding themselves.

To be added, fill our the form at the bottom of the page. You can add a note to share anything of interest, like your CWNE status, podcast, that you work for a vendor, or that you really love Baby Yoda. The airport code is to help people find you if they end up in your neck of the woods. Obviously, the note and airport code are optional.

Note: This is for attendees. Sorry, if you aren’t attending I will not add you to the list.

It’s a tradition here at Mostly Networks to run the unofficial Twitter attendee list for the US edition of the WLPC conference. WLPC registration is open until Jan 15th, 2019, but you should register earlier before the conference is full!

I hope you find the list useful. It’s not updated real-time, but it will be updated daily as long as people keep adding themselves.

To be added, fill our the form at the bottom of the page. You can add a note to share anything of interest, like your CWNE status, podcast, that you work for a vendor, or that you really like tacos. The airport code is to help people find you if they end up in your neck of the woods. Obviously, the note and airport code are optional.

Note: This is for attendees. Sorry, if you aren’t attending I will not add you to the list.

[Last Update: 2019-05-03 22:24:42Z]

Yeah, I know. I’m supposed to be a Wi-Fi guy. However, I sometimes still have to touch routers and switches. I have some help for you if you need to upgrade some old Nexus switches. The Nexus 3048s are great DC caliber gig switches with proper front-to-back airflow. Used ones are really cheap and I think they make great management switches, which is what I’m using them for. If you have a Cisco Nexus 3048 with an older release of NX-OS on it, you need to go through several upgrades to get it to NX-OS v7. Here’s a walkthrough on the procedures. If you find you already on v6, for example, you can skip the 5.x step.

Upon initial boot, you will need to abort Power-On Auto Provisioning. You will then be prompted for the admin password. Skip the basic configuration dialog. After a few moments, you will be able to login with the admin credentials you set during boot.

I suggest downloading all the required code and placing it on a USB. I’ve found this to be the fastest and least painful method.

Copy the needed software updates from USB to bootflash:

copy usb1:///n3000-uk9-kickstart.5.0.3.U5.1j.bin bootflash:
copy usb1:///n3000-uk9.5.0.3.U5.1j.bin bootflash:

copy usb1:///n3000-uk9.6.0.2.U6.2a.bin bootflash:
copy usb1:///n3000-uk9-kickstart.6.0.2.U6.2a.bin bootflash:

copy usb1:///n3000-uk9.6.0.2.U6.10.bin bootflash:
copy usb1:///n3000-uk9-kickstart.6.0.2.U6.10.bin bootflash:

# Probably not be enough space, this will probably need to be done
# later, but you can try it...
copy usb1:///nxos.7.0.3.I4.8.bin bootflash:

Upgrade to NXOS 5.0(3)U5 (req’d to upgrade to NXOS 6)

install all system bootflash:///n3000-uk9.5.0.3.U5.1j.bin kickstart bootflash:///n3000-uk9-kickstart.5.0.3.U5.1j.bin

The upgrade takes several minutes while it verifies and extracts the update. It will then come up with a warning that ISSU isn’t available and ask if you want to continue with the disruptive upgrade. Say yes and eventually the switch will reboot and return to the login prompt.

Cleanup to make sure there’s enough room for upgrades to run.

del n3000-uk9.5* no-prompt

Now we get to run through the upgrade procedure several times.

Upgrade to NXOS 6.0(2)U6(2a)
install all system bootflash:///n3000-uk9.6.0.2.U6.2a.bin kickstart bootflash:///n3000-uk9-kickstart.6.0.2.U6.2a.bin

Upgrade to NXOS 6.0(2)U6(10)

install all system bootflash:///n3000-uk9.6.0.2.U6.10.bin kickstart bootflash:///n3000-uk9-kickstart.6.0.2.U6.10.bin

Install NXOS 7.0

#If you were able to copy the NX-OS v7 image earlier, skip this copy.
copy usb1:///nxos.7.0.3.I4.8.bin bootflash:

install all nxos bootflash:nxos.7.0.3.I4.8.bin

Clean up old versions

del n3000* no-prompt

The sUAS Remote Pilot certificate looks a lot like this.

Well, I did it. Actually, I did it back in August. I took my FAA Part 107 exam and passed with “a very good score for a non-pilot” according to the proctor. That means I can now legally fly a drone Small Unmanned Aerial System for commercial purposes. It also means that I fly under a less restrictive set of rules than the hobbyist rules, which are currently in flux after the passage of the FAA reauthorization bill.

I didn’t think the exam was very difficult, but I also had done some private pilot study in the past (never finished) so was already familiar with airspace and how to read FAA sectional maps. Those are the most difficult parts of the exam for most people. The main resources I used were the 2018 version of the ASA Remote Pilot Test Prep book and this excellent video on Youtube:

I particularly liked the book because it’s very much just the things you need to know, it’s inexpensive, and includes a copy of the FAA supplement that is used during the actual exam. This allows you to get some familiarity with the exam materials.

Part of what pushed me to finally do this was seeing Lee Badman pass his exam. I think he and I are going to create a union of drone guys. The First Union of Drone Guys Everywhere. Lee wanted to call it Good Looking Drone Guys of Action That Smell Nice and Whatnot, but GLDGATSNW doesn’t really flow on the tongue like FUDGE. I mean, who doesn’t love fudge? Plus, if you crash your drone, you can say “Oh, FUDGE.” Not sure how that’ll help, but you can say it and everyone will know you’re in our union. Remember, we’re pulling for you. We’re all in this together.

I wrote a couple articles for the Airheads Community on learning the 802.11 standard and on how to track what’s going on with the 802.11 committee. I’ve included a snippet of each with links to the full articles in case you’d like to read more.

The 802.11 Standard and You

The 802.11 standard can be something of a mystery, especially when you are new to wireless networking. Have you ever wondered why wireless LANs work the way they do? WLAN configurations are full of cryptic options. Do you know what they do? Ever tried to make heads or tails of a packet capture and not understood what all the pieces are or if they are working the way they are supposed to? You can search for the answers with Google, but you might consider looking to the standard for the answers. If you really want to understand wireless, you need to gain some familiarity with the standard. Read the full article…
