I can’t tell you how grade is computed because I don’t think Red Hat communicates on this point. But you can reasonably think the exam’s got weigths on questions.
Concerning man pages and –help option, you can use them without any fear, you will definitely not loose any marks.

Because at the moment i am studying about LDAP. For example am I supposed to install the following packages for the LDAP authentication?

Or they will be allready installed and i must install only the authconfig-gtk. Can I use the gui for the ldap authentication?
And the last but not least. I think that i mustn’t know how to setup an LDAP server I must know just to setup the client for the RHCSA. For example they must give me the LDAP Server url and the certificate url.Am I correct?

You are supposed to know these instructions (http://www.certdepot.net/rhel7-configure-system-use-existing-ldap-directory-service-user-group-information/) for LDAP client configuration. I would advise you to use the authconfig-tui or authconfig commands but you can still use the authconfig-gtk if you really want.
Concerning the LDAP server URL and certificate URL, I think you are right: they will give them to you.

Why are they not providing any information for the exam???The info for the exam is like an aircraft’s black box!
For the RHCSA 6 exam (it could be different in the RHCSA 7 case), a RedHat server with a gui was directly available with no need to register.
So, the new exam objectives don’t require any server installations as they previously required? No ftp, http, ntp servers? Are all those gone to RHCE?
Yes, there is no FTP, HTTP or NTP server configurations in RHCSA 7 any more. Furthermore, there is no FTP server configuration in RHCE 7 either but there are a lot of other difficult tasks instead (Kerberos, teaming, etc).
Why “Modify the system bootloader” is greyed out… many of use are used to grub legacy or the distributions like Ubuntu.
For those that are unaware how to change the timeout or default entry on grub 2:
#vi /etc/default/grub
Edit “GRUB_TIMEOUT=5” to a desired value.Save.
#grub2-mkconfig -o /boot/grub2/grub.cfg
For default value:
#grub2-set-default 0 //this means 1st entry , 1= second, etc
#grub2-mkconfig -o /boot/grub2/grub.cfg
The only reason why the “Modify the system bootloader” is currently greyed out is because it takes time to write useful tutorials and I didn’t have time to do it yet!
Another user of this website offered interesting resources on this subject and I still need to use them before creating a tutorial. But this will ultimately be done!
I want to thank CertDepot for his website. It really helped me to pass my RHCSA (RHEL7) today. Sadly, I made a mistake after 90 min of work (got only 4 tasks left), a typo that turned the machine unbootable. With only 60 min left, I still managed to “PASS” 216 out of 300. I was really upset that I didn’t have enough time to do them all.
I want to give some tips for those who are taking the exam:
1. Don’t be in a hurry, you’ll make silly mistakes.
2. At the beginning, spend 5 min to read all the tasks and select the ones that are the most destructive (if you make a mistake) and start with them. Even if you have to start over, you will have plenty of time.
3. Don’t worry about the time! If I can do it in 60 min, you can do it better in 150 min.
I want to thank again CertDepot for his website. It is one of the few places where you can really get prepared for the RHEL7 exams.

The bad part with these things are the core parts that aren’t in use where I am. SELinux and host based Firewalls are things we just don’t do in our environment. With SELinux and Firewalls being so ingrained in the test, I’m hoping that all my studying and experience will see me through.

The SELinux and Firewalld parts required for the RHCSA & RHCE exams are not very difficult to learn.
Spend a couple of hours to understand the main points (semanage fcontext, restorecon, setsebool for SELinux, firewall-cmd –add-port, firewall-cmd –add-service, firewall-cmd –add-forward-port, firewall-cmd –add-rule for Firewalld) and it should be fine.
These exams don’t ask you to become an expert in these topics (no SELinux policy writing skills, no multi-zone management, etc).

I am planning to give the exam200 but have no experience in RHEL 7 at all. Seems there are new stuff that I need to figure out.
My first question would be: Is there any requirement for the installation of virtual machine as a part of exam? I was reading Michael Jang’s book but for RHEL 6. Which book for RHEL 7 you guys recommend?

If you already know RHEL 6, you will have to learn the basics of Systemd and Firewalld (easy), some network configurations with NetworkManager via the nmtui or nmcli commands (slightly more difficult) and the procedure to take control of a VM without the root password (critical). If you’ve got no RHEL experience, the learning curve will be deeper and take more time but nothing to be afraid of.
Concerning the installation of a virtual machine, a theorical knowledge should be enough.
There is a book review, check it and good luck!

One more question, I have found an ISO for RHEL 7 in our office’s file server. When I try to install it does insist set up a source of installation like URL link or it does not let you move on. How do I deal with it? Appreciate your help very much!! I need RHEL 7 installed for my RHCSA.
I really don’t see the point to install RHEL 7 when CentOS 7 is totally free.
The only differences between them are the logos/trademarks and a kernel compiled with a bigger number of drivers: nothing that could trigger concerns for the RHCSA.

Thanks again. Right after I posted my question, I found the same link and downloaded it. It is running like a charm on my VMWare Environment. I found many commands changed in RHEL 7. My favourite commands are no more there such as ifconfig, service etc.
I am reading on the forums and they are saying I mainly need to learn systemd and firewalld as new topics in RHCSA for RHEL 7 otherwise the rest is the same as RHEL 6.
You must also know how to boot and take control of a VM without the root password. The procedure has changed and is slightly more complicated than before. This is mandatory.

The RHCSA & RHCE exams are definitively based on VM.
Are you talking about Single user mode here?
Yes, it’s a kind of Single user mode. In fact, there is no Single user mode in RHEL 7.
There is a rescue mode and a maintenance mode. They are similar to the Single user mode but not identical. Due to Systemd, a lot of things have changed.
Could you share with me what the passing is score for RHCSA 7?
The passing score of the RHCSA 7 exam is 210 out of 300.
Hello CertDepot, If the exam is based on VM then how we can have Graphical interface then? I am fan of CLI but firewalld being a new thing to me I am planning to rely on GUI instead of going through all those command lines. Appreciate your response in advance!!
You should only rely on CLI and text interfaces (nmtui, etc). Don’t expect GUI to be available during the exam.
Take some time to study Firewalld with the CLI and you will learn to like it.

Yes, you can use the help command and tab to complete to get some information about bash commands. You can almost get the same result for most of the Linux commands with the man command.
Concerning the root password, it is not required to crack it but to change it at boot time through a standard procedure.

As the red hat website mentioned below as pre-requisite for this exam “Have either taken the Red Hat System Administration I (RH124) and II (RH134) courses or else the RHCSA Rapid Track Course (RH199) or have comparable work experience as a system administrator on Red Hat Enterprise Linux”.

By the way can you help me how to properly Install Server with GUI on a minimal environment without affecting the current configuration? On the video tutorial of Sander Van Vugt he focuses more on graphical environment while configuring LDAP, firewall, Disk Management, etc.
I have already tried installing it on my VM but RHEL 7 requires to create a user. Is this okay?

During a normal RHEL 7 installation, select the option for the graphical environment and create a user.
A typical installation doesn’t take more than 10GB (512MB for /boot, 1GB for swap and the remaining space for /).
You need at least 2GB of memory.

Just did my rhcsa exam. I was wondering how the rating goes. I’ve configured e.g ntpd, autofs and selinux but forgot to enable these on reboot by ‘systemct enable servicename.service’. Is the whole configuration discarded or will I still gain some points from doing the configuration but forgetting to enable the services?
It is difficult to fully answer your question without knowing how Red Hat checking system works inside. I think you should get some points but perhaps not enough to pass your exam.

As I recently passed the RHCSA 7 EX200 exam, I just want to mention a guide to those who are going for the EX200 RHCSA7 exam.
1. Attempt the easy questions first. What I mean by easy, are the ones that you can do easily and comfortable in doing.
2. Any questions that you are not too sure about, leave it later, but not too late that you run out of time 🙂
3. Aim to do all the easy questions by 1.5 hours and leave the last hour for doing the ones you find difficult or unsure of.
4. Any changes you make on the /etc/fstab always reboot e.g. systemctl reboot and make sure the changes are still there once rebooted.
5. command –help is very helpful, use it.
6. ** One week before your exam, practice the subjects that you are still not comfortable or unsure. Spend an hour or more each day doing these. Remember no sacrifice no victory 🙂
7. Finally, good luck.

Thanks Redsu for the advice. In addition to #4 in order to avoid emergency or rescue mode we need to run mount -a just to be sure or verify that all items on /etc/fstab are working fine without having any mount issues after reboot. I’m new to RHEL and this is what I have learned from the experts. 🙂

Hi, I have the exam next week and I need help to understand from someone who passed the exam if the server comes with gui installed and ready to use, installed but in multi-user? minimal install only?
Also, I tried to install the rhel gui from a minimal installation through centos 7 packages, but it can’t find the “server with gui” group. How can I get the packages I need from the RHEL7 DVD?
I think you could assume that the server comes in multi-user level and in a non-minimal install but without any GUI.
Concerning the GUI installation, did you run a command like yum grouplist?

So as I read all the posts here I assume that we should avoid install the group ‘server with GUI’ cause its taking a lot of time … ,
what is the type of RHEL7 install options I should choose in order to proper simulate the environment that will be in test?
I would answer I use the @base group package in the kickstart file of any VM I create. This provides a standard configuration with more packages than the @core group package that matches a minimal installation.
and another little question, I noticed that in minimal install the TAB auto complementary not working the same for a lot of commands that do complementary on full install,
is it possible that the exam would be on minimal install in multi-user target without all this TAB auto complementary?
As previously answered, I don’t think the exam will run on a server in minimal install.
However, if it were the case, you should still be able to install the bash-completion feature as it is explained here.

I would appreciate if you can give me link for any sample papers for RHCSA that I can use for practice.
1) Luks is not in the RHCSA 7 curriculum, therefore you can’t be asked anything about it.
2) System troubleshooting is a very useful skill when something doesn’t work as expected which is not so rare.
Grub troubleshooting shouldn’t be a priority.
3) NFS and Samba client configuration aka mount/automount are part of the RHCSA 7 objectives, Samba/NFS/Http server configurations are not. Only one virtual machine should be available to students. The RHCSA exam is mainly about client configuration.
4) You are supposed to know how to do it but due to the time to install a virtual machine, you shouldn’t be asked to do it. In fact, nobody reported such a task.
5) You need to have some good skills in shell scripting but not be a master.
This website doesn’t provide any braindumps. However, there are a lot of available resources (quiz, tips, etc).
The most difficult thing is to take the time to search for them.

or

both will work the same.

Kerberos is part of RHCSA or not??? even though it is not mentioned in the objectives, but the course books provided by redhat do cover these topics. Should we worry about this part for RHCSA or not?

The Kerberos topic is definitively not in the RHCSA objectives. I suppose Kerberos aspects (like nfs secure server) are mentioned in the RHCSA course books because there are not several ways to configure the NFS client and it’s better to integrate all the possible features when you set it up even though you don’t use them later.

You need to add a rw option in the /etc/fstab file for the line corresponding to /mnt/test and unmount/mount the /mnt/test filesystem.

Hi all, I have RHCSA exam coming up soon. I have the following questions. Appreciate if somebody can answer. I can’t find it on any books or other places.
My questions are mostly about installation.
-) Do they provide CD media or ISO image? Not that it matters, but just would like to know. How about installation server? HTTP or FTP. Will it exist already or we have to set it up?
-) How many servers you will be provided for the test?
-) How deep are the questions about installation? Do we get questions to setup PXE boot, dhcp, kickstart and perform unattended installations?

There shouldn’t be any installation asked for the RHCSA exam.
You should only be provided one already installed virtual machine for the exam.
As mentioned before, you are supposed to know how to deal with installations but shouldn’t need to make one during the exam.
PXE boot and DHCP are even not part of the RHCSA curriculum.
I passed my RHCSA a few days ago, got 300/300. Finished all tasks in around 80 minutes, checked that everything was working, rebooted the VM several times.
Have to be honest and admit that for anyone with a relevant work experience, this exam is like a colouring book. A little piece of advice for those taking the exam, once you get networking configured, use multiple SSH windows (I used one for journalctl, one for audit.log and one to do the work). It really helps to track down issues easily, if any.

Yes, there’s only one VM for the RHCSA exam, but you are allowed to use the host OS as you see fit.

Practice the RHCSA 7 quiz on this website and use the man pages when a doubt arises.
To be honest, you should learn CLI as it matters the most in real life and during the interview as well and you will hardly see servers with GUI in production.
Now your question regarding exam, I must say this is not something anyone should hide from others about what can or cannot be possible. If you know how to run or turn rhel into GUI, then you are good to go otherwise learn CLI.
You will be presented with multi-user target mode. Use that machine as you wish, it’s all yours.
But remember, CLI is always fast and time saver than GUI.

I just wanted to think Certdepot, it is very resourceful, but I went today to the exam and I failed because I could not reboot my VM and did not have any time to do a last check. So if I can give anyone an advice is to reboot reboot and reboot every time you do something critical like firewall, filesystem management, …
Don’t wait the last minute to do a final reboot, make sure if you reboot to have enough time to repair or restart in case of a crash.

What are my chances for passing RHCSA exam if I use a different root password than the one assigned
The RHCSA exam starts by a question asking to reboot and replace the root password with one given.
I don’t see why you wouldn’t use the password given?
Don’t take it for granted, but you will likely get zero points for the exam. If an automated assessment script cannot log into a VM, then it doesn’t matter how many tasks your did, as these cannot be verified. Again, just my opinion, don’t take it for granted.

I think you need to get some knowledge about KVM (access to console, autostart of virtual machine, etc). After, it’s not sure that you really need to put this knowledge into practice.

I took the EX200 recently and I did not pass. I would like to ask a couple of questions about things that I had trouble with and hopefully you guys can help me out. I did an individual exam at a kiosk.
1. The size of the window was really small. Whenever I did –help and I could just see end of the information. Maximazing the window only made things bigger, it did not give me more space. I know I could pipe it through less but it still slowed me down a lot. Any other suggestions?
2. You can’t copy and paste. This turned out to be a problem for me when it came to copying UUID in order to mount partitions in fstab. I bypassed it by naming the partitions and using the LABEL. Is there anything else I can do, because Id rather use the UUID.
3. Everywhere I’ve asked I was told to pick a gui or terminal method, stick with it and practice it. Well after I installed authconfig-gtk for the LDAP connection I discovered that the gui will not work. Is this normal? Should I have just learned the terminal way, always?
You should always learn to do any task at the command line. If it’s quicker, easier, you can also learn the gui way.
You never know if the gui will be available. This is true for the exam, this is also true in your career (firewall, remote connection, etc).
I’ve been doing Linux support for many years, and one thing that I learnt was this: “there is no GUI in production”.
I cannot comment much on #1 and #2 as I never took a Kiosk exam, but in terms of #3, always, and I mean always use the CLI. It’s the fastest way, and the right way when working with Linux servers.
Yeah terminal is best. Multiple terminals are even better.
After that a good setup is required. I have done exams with one screen, and exams with Two screens(best) but it’s hard to know which is which at time of booking. I have not done the Kiosk so I can’t comment on that setup.
Copy and past saves typos. The key with this is ssh from one environment to another. Using some virtual interfaces, the copy and paste usually doesn’t work.
Having said all that sometimes it is necessary to use the GUI as the terminal may not save some of the various settings.
Interesting, my experience is the opposite, I’m used to GUI having less settings that CLI. Can you give an example of the GUI saving more settings (as you say) that terminal?

It was around 1 year ago, but I’ll try and give all the details but I am doing this from memory. I believe I was doing the either network bound or network teaming and/or Ipv6 settings. os, RH 7.0
nmcli there were two parts to this one
* Complicated to use (requiring a lot of memory work mine is bad, I did not wish to dig throuh a man file (s) )
* not saving and updating the relevant information ( IPv6 )
nmtui
* on check the update did not occur, or gave an error message. I can’t remember which
* buggy at time of test this was not been maintained, and hence could not be trusted.
I knew this at the time but tried this any way.
Hence the GUI network manager. I could of missed something at the time but unlikely.
NetworkManager does not have its own graphical user interface (GUI) in RHEL 7.
I don’t mean to sound rude, but what does saying “nmcli is complicated to use” have to do with available settings and features of the tool?
As I said the details are a bit old. I didnt have the opportunity to record or reproduce the bug(s) or the environment of the bugs, ie rh 7.0

Point number 2. The vi and vim tool are great tools to work it in.
One way of inserting that UUID is as follows:
# vim or vi /etc/fstab then press esc keyboard and then type :r! $(blkid -o value UUID /dev/VG/LV) it should work I use to use this way to insert any command I want.
Point number 3: There is the option of authconfig command line and it is called authconfig-tui, try typing this command and you will see the difference. I know it will help you a lot to do things more easily.

Or you can just append output from the command line then go in with vi and fix them up:

When you create the volume group vgtest, you specify the -s option with the vgcreate command to give a Physical Extent size of 32MB (by default 4MB). Then, you create the logical volume lv_test with 10 Logical Extents with the -l option through the lvcreate command.
The extent size unit was defined with the vgcreate command and then used, multiplied by 10, with the lvcreate command.

The repository is that HTTP / NFS / VSFTPD? To configure client side is only creating a repo file or do you have to login the host system and modify/create a repo with all commands like firewall-cmd and semanage?
The troubleshooting stuff, Is that also grub issues. If yes, do you have an example procedure to test at my home server?

Concerning the configuration of a client accessing a remote repository, you only need to create the repo file on the client: you normally don’t need to open any new firewall flow nor to run any semanage command.
Concerning the troubleshooting stuff, I don’t think you need to master GRUB2 configuration but you still need a global understanding of GRUB2.

Yes, you will definitively need to install the ftp package on the client but using a remote ftp repository shouldn’t be required (http is more likely).
Hello Certdepot, if the ftp package is not installed on the client, without yum, should I then SCP ftp package from the host? Do I have the rights then? What should be done after installing the ftp package? Think that on the host everything is already ready/active. Regards Johan
If you are asked to use a remote ftp repository, you will be able to use yum to install the ftp package.
It is very unlikely that you would get access to any other machine except your local machine. So don’t think about it.

Relax a little, you will be given every thing you need for a inital basic setup.
The exam is time limited, practices and know the procedures, know the syntax ie baseurl, gpgcheck, [name], name, enabled, etc.
and lookup yum localinstall
If ftp or http client is required for initial configuration, this will be provided, in one form or another. The exam format changes from time to time so be prepared to adapt.

Took the test yesterday, scored 300. Here is my take on the exam:
1. Understand exactly what you need to configure before you start working on an item. Have a good idea of how you’re going to satisfy the requirements step by step.
2. Test what you’ve configured to make sure it works the way it’s expected to. i.e., check permissions by switching to a user account and trying to read/write a file. Test your fstab entries by unmounting and doing a mount -a command before you reboot.
3. Don’t rely on the gui – it can keep you from understanding what’s really going on under the menus. So if the gui is not available, you will struggle figuring out how to configure something.
4. Know how to search the man pages and use the –help flag. You don’t have to memorize every flag if you know your way around the documentation.
5. Final reboot and test for the things that should be persistent –security and storage settings, network services.
I used Sander Van Vugt’s book and this website to prepare. I booted my laptop to an external USB drive to build a KVM environment with multiple VMs.

Concerning SELinux, definitively no. You must keep SELinux in enforcing mode because 1) SELinux is an RHCSA objective and 2) RedHat is actively promoting SELinux as a security feature.
Concerning Firewalld, things are slightly different. You have to choose between Firewalld and Iptables. But you have to use one or the other to protect you against all the threats outside.
In 1) and 2) cases, if you don’t follow the rules, you will get penalties.
I failed the RHCSA exam, the exam environment: there was an host that was already installed, on that vm I needed to create lvm, but I think I needed new disk configured from the host, then I had to reset root password, my question is: how to attach a new virtual disk to the vm, if we do not know the root password for host, or can I reset the root password for the host?
No, you don’t know the root password of the host and you can’t reset the root password of this same host.
I don’t think you can attach a new virtual disk to the VM. You have to find an other solution: reduce the size of the swap partition, reduce the space used by another partition, etc.
Have you checked the existing disk (fdisk -l comes to mind) on the guest? Perhaps it had some unused space that you were able to utilise?
In addition to CertDepot’s comment: There are multiple questions on the exam. The exam is tough and it is meant to be. I would suggest you review all the potential question ie the EXAM OBJECTIVES on this website. LVM can be a little complex at several levels. There may be free space at any one of these levels (Physical volume, Volume_Group, or Logical_Volume). In addition, that answer may simply be to delete and make a new volume or resize it.
Don’t give up!
You don’t have to attach a new disk to the vm. You just have to look in the existing disk, normally there is enough unformatted space for the exam.

It is clearly possible to mount a filesystem using Systemd. However, I don’t know whether a filesystem can be automounted through Systemd or not.

Yes, you have access to the VM console but not through virt-manager. RedHat developped its own software (if I remember correctly).

Create a directory called testdir2 as user mary in her home directory and set default ACLs on it for user barry for read and write access.
I did the following:
#su – mary
#mkdir testdir (permissions are default 700 on this directory)
As root:
# cd /home/mary
#setfacl -R -m u:barry:rw testdir/
When I su – barry I am not able to cd to this directory. When I use setfacl -R -m u:rwX testdir/
I’m missing something here?

Yes, definitively. The alternative is to register as developer and download RHEL 7 (see details here).
But in the case of the RHCSA & RHCE exams, it is not required.

I am planning to take RHCSA in Feb end but very confused about preparation for exam, study resources and materials for practice.
I do not have previous Linux Admin experience at all but studied Unix Admin I and II on CentOS 6.0 before 3 years. Having couple of years of exp as Desktop Analyst on Windows platform.
Now I have started self study since last month. Installed CentOS VDI in Oracle VBox and trying to prepare for an exam. I have below books to read:
RHCSA/RHCE EX200/300 Study Guide by M. Jang 6th Edition; RHEL 7 System Admin guide 7th Edition; RHCSA/RHCE 124/134/254 books & RHCSA/RHCE 7 by Sander Van Vugt and also training videos of RHCSA/RHCE 124/134/254.
Confusion: 1) What is the best way to prepare for an exam? 2) Should I read books of 124 and 134 to pass RHCSA? Which book is best to read and prepare for an exam? 3) As per my above details, what you think how much time it will take for preparation if I study 8 hours a day?
Please please please provide me best solution so I can study with better plan.
Practicing during 8 hours a day alone is a lot and seems difficult to do on a long period of time.
With all the material you’ve got the RHCSA exam shouldn’t be too difficult to pass.
Start by seriously learning the password change at boot and all the disk operations (creation of physical and logical partitions, physical and logical volumes, volume groups, swap partition, etc).
After, it is difficult to tell you how long it will take you to master most of the topics, because it depends on what you already know.
If you seriously study all day long, two weeks should be enough. Don’t read books about CentOS 6, because CentOS 7 is very different except for the disk operations and very basic Unix tasks.
You can read 124/134 books, if they are for CentOS 7.

You get training books if you purchase the training session. Otherwise, you don’t get anything.

As written on this website (here), you have to focus on booting and replacing the previous unknown root password, dealing with all the aspects of disk management and seriously practicing the other exam objectives listed in the curriculum.

No, LPI and EX200 are two different things.
LPI is a certification program delivered by the Linux Professional Institute. LPIC-1, LPIC-2 and LPIC-3 are the exam names in this program.
EX200 is the entry-level exam of the Red Hat certification program (RHCSA).
Both RHCSA and LPIC-1 are entry level exams. The former is RedHat based, the latter is distribution-neutral, and requires you to pass two exams (101 and 102).
RHCSA and LPIC-1 differ in material that’s covered, as well as in a way you are tested (hands-on vs multiple choice). Plus RHCSA is purely RedHat so you need to know the “RedHat way” of doing things, what you can get away with LPIC-1.
I’ve studied and passed both, and I found LPIC-1 a bit more challenging, mainly because it’s not tied to a particular Linux distribution. RHCSA was easier to pass because I used RedHat on a daily basis.

I did the exam this year and I scored highly. Two little things I thought should be known:
1. The exam used older software than expected – it is actually based on RHEL 7.0 and there was even mention of NFSv3
2. From the very beginning, the VM host had a GUI, but the VM guest which you were required to perform the tasks on, had no GUI. I didn’t try to change this setup in any way, so cannot say if it is easy to change

Thank you certdepot for the great tutorials, i’m planning to take the EX200 next week & the test center send me the objectives which contains rhel 7.0 objectives like LUKS and VNC which they aren’t within the official REDHAT 7.3 objectives, which objectives should i consider?
According to the current official RHCSA exam objectives, LUKS and VNC topics are not part of the exam.
You shouldn’t spend time to study these subjects but focus on the official objectives.

Nobody can give you a definitive answer on this subject. But, your assumption seems right.
I want you to know that:
If the LDAP client server configuration is not correctly set in the rhsca exam, you cannot pass the exam.
Has anybody noticed that the kick start objective has been removed from the official RHCSA site ? I took a local copy about 6 weeks ago and it was there then, now it has gone. No mention of KS at all. Can we trust this? Anybody know anything more. I have my exam next week and would obviously like to know so I can study accordingly… Thks. Paul
I have to admit I didn’t notice this change.
Effectively, the two following lines have recently been removed from the RHCSA objectives:
•Install Red Hat Enterprise Linux automatically using Kickstart.
•Configure a physical machine to host virtual guests.
As the RedHat RHCSA objective page is the official reference, I think you can trust it.
Also, it’s a long time that everybody knows that KickStart matters are very unlikely to occur during an RHCSA exam, because it would take too much time to run a complete installation compare to the duration of the exam.

The url above does of course state that the content is subject to change but given that kickstart in itself is a considerable subject area can anybody confirm that it has in fact been removed from said syllabus as there is no mention of it now. (It was previously the objective immediately below ‘Configure systems to boot into a specific target automatically’). I’m due to take my exam next week and it would be really useful to know…

I’ve read so many comments that the exam is supposed to be easy… Well for me it wasn’t easy at all. A few remarks:
1. The VM had no GUI. I haven’t tried to “isolate graphical.target” or anything of that sort though.
2. Does anyone know how to scroll page up/down when there are no such keys on the keyboard? I had to use –help commands and scroll through pages using “|less”. At some point it became a real pain.
3. 2.5 hours is more than enough to complete the tasks. It really is, trust me.
4. If you have a chance, please write the exam in the classroom, not KIOSK. You are REALLY observed (2 cameras) + you share your laptop screen, it made me feel really uncomfortable and I had trouble concentrating on the task. But it’s my personal opinion.

There’s a KVM objectives in the exam. What do I need to learn? Install server? like assigning cpu and memory? then install via kickstart?
Red Hat recently removed two objectives from the RHCSA exam:
– Install RHEL using Kickstart,
– Configure a physical machine to host virtual guests.
So this means that you shouldn’t spend too much time on KVM and Kickstart.
Basic knowledge of both should be enough.
For doing multi tasking you can install screen rpm which will be included in repo. For creating multiple session you just need to execute for example

To be clear, Putty is a Microsoft Windows remote connection App, using protocols as ssh, telnet, rlogin etc. And hence not available in the exam.
In the exam environment, your host OS will be Red Hat Enterprise Linux. It is likely you will be connecting to a virtual machine.
The two main methods of connections are the through the supplied Virtual Console (I think), or through an shell terminal (use ssh).
You can open multiple shell terminals.

Too answer your question, copy and past depends on settings. Highlight the text, ctrl-c, for copy, ctrl-v, to past. There should be mouse options as well. This is very similar to the windows command line method.
I am not sure where your are going with the UUID. To answer your other question, trial, error, and practice, are your friends. Opening multiple bash shell terminals can be done for most Linux (assumed CentOS or RHEL).
What he meant was he didn’t like the idea of manually typing the UUID – he wanted to copy and paste it “the Putty way”. As per my previous reply, the same can be achieved with xterm.
No need to be sad, xterm allows you to achieve the same thing – you can automatically copy selection to clipboard. Therefore if you open multiple xterm windows, you can copy/paste from one to another.
If we can use xterm, does that mean the VM has the gui desktop already installed ? If not would the following steps be correct?
1. yum groupinstall gnome-desktop x11 fonts
2. systemctl start graphical.target

There may or may not be a GUI installed on the server, I cannot tell. But you can use xterm regardless.
Last question to you all. To all who passed the exam, The examples here are all of the exam? It is just different questions? Or this site is missing something?
The questions are similar but not identical.
This website does not contain dumps if that’s what you’re indirectly aimed to know, however questions posted here are of similar complexity you would expect during the exam.
A question to you sir. Since you passed the exam. Based on the objective of ldap and based on the review here. Configuring ldap is not hard if you know how to use authconfig-tui right? Because the exam will just give the server details for ldap and the TLS certificate download directory. I don’t have formal training for RHEL7. But I am a SA for 8 years working on HPUX- RHEL3-6… But of course rhel or rhel7 is a very wide scope. You don’t use all the LDAP and some stuff there in your work. Not everything is needed.
So I can say, if you only know the packages what to install? especially for LDAP, is it safe to say you can configure the client? since it is pretty common sense? like asking you the location of the ldap server? tls cert? something like that?
Hope you understand my point here.
To practice LDAP configuration, you only need 2 VMs: one LDAP server and one basic client.
The tutorials for both are available on this website. The use of authconfig-tui is fine, even though Red Hat decided to deprecate it.
I advise you to spent some time to configure these 2 VMs. Otherwise to take the risk to fail some questions at the exam.

You need to know how Grub works and how to upgrade the kernel.
There is nothing complicated.
I’d say that configuring LDAP isn’t hard if you know how to configure a basic LDAP server regardless of a tool you use for it (be it authconfig-tui or something else).
I’m self taught when it comes to Linux (Red Hat included), and I concur that you don’t use all the LDAP stuff on a daily basis. Therefore the key thing for the exam is practice. I think that only knowing how to install a package isn’t sufficient in order to successfully configure a service. There are almost always caveats which you learn through testing. Surely there is a chance that you might get away with configuring the service on the first attempt, but YMMV.

That looks like RHEL6 exam objectives. If you question this, go directly to the Red Hat exam objective. CertDepot keeps the site up to date.
These look outdated to me. FTP and VNC are no longer listed as objectives of the RHCSA exam.
I would like to ask how the environment looks like for the kiosk exam, you log in and then you get an environment where you can log in to the desktop or server? Is there an ssh program you can use or not? Can you open the console?
I dont quite understand how this works. You have access to the host and the desktop or server is set up a vm? and then you access it?
In short, when you sit the exam, you get access to a computer with everything explained on screen. I cannot go much into details, but you work with virtual machines.
If you are talking about an exam environment, you will be given instructions to access the VM.
Follow Certdepot’s instruction on setting up a home testing lab, for something that should be close to an exam environment. There will be some differences. Get to know the different connection methods, including the Virtual Manager and SSH. There have been poor review of the kiosk exam type, I can’t speak for this type of exam.

I want to book the RHCSA test at GlobalKnowledge UK (classroom based I understand).
I am assuming it is a one screen only setup for the exam.
Questions:
1) Will it be a 2x server/machine exam?
2) Are we able to use GUI in one of the servers (possibly the main server, which I believe will have few things configured so we can perform tasks on/from the other server?) to then use the terminal app to ssh into the other server? Reason for asking is that using console only is a bit of pain in terms of scrolling, screen display size, use | less, etc
3) Will we need to configure an ldap server, nfs server, dns server from scratch or just perform tasks to connect to an already configured server with these roles (I believe to configure these roles is more an RHCE objective)?
4) In terms of practising, what would be the best way of knowing which packages to install on tester server so to perform tasks on main server, e.g., if you do not know off the top of your head; do you need to always do like: yum provides nfs* (to find out nfs client packages) or yum provides bind*….and so on???
I would appreciate comments….
1) You will get access to a host in which you will be asked to configure (not install) an instance.
2) You shouldn’t have access to a GUI except the one provided (and limited) coming with the host.
3) No LDAP, NFS or DNS server configuration required for the RHCSA exam.
4) Practice is the key word.

There is no ssh between the host and the instance. The instance runs on the host.
It depends, if the host and the instance are on the same network, then there is no reason why you shouldn’t be able to SSH into the instance.

By the sounds of it, the host has KVM installed and I will grab console by starting virt-manager and selecting the instance. Then every configuration via console.
How do you guys switch between screens (task list and actual instance console?) Is it minimising one opening another?

Thanks for the good work you are doing in helping redhat beginners to pass the RHEL7 RHCSA. I am preparing to take the exam by the end of the month. I am impressed of the knowledge I have gained from here but please I need a little help. I can’t find the tutorial for the LDAP or it’s not part of the RHEL7 RHCSA objectives?? Secondly I am located in africa Cameroon where there is no center for me to take the exam. I need to travel to a neighboring country Nigeria to write the exam. I don’t know how to go about to register the exam. Is it possible for my brother to register the exam in the US and for me to travel to Nigeria and write the exam?? What is the procedure?? The institutions where I want to write the exam is a training partner with Red Hat in West Africa. Hope the RHCSA objectives are up to date because that is what I want to use to prepare myself for the exam.

Concerning the tutorial for the LDAP part, you can find it at http://www.pmsas.pr.gov.br/wp-content/?id=certdepot-EX200&exam=rhel7-configure-system-use-existing-ldap-directory-service-user-group-information/. The client configuration is still part of the RHCSA exam. The server side is only necessary for testing purpose but will not be part of the exam itself.
The RHCSA objectives haven’t seen any major changes for a long time and none is expected in the short term.
Concerning your exam registration, you should directly contact your training partner.
This morning I had my second exam on RHCSA7, thanks to your website this time I needed less manpage searching and I could resolve the objectives much faster than before.
Even though, this time the exam had an objective that required some little disk space that wasn’t there. I feel this is crooked and it doesn’t relate to real life situation.

My real questions are really backward compatible…
autofs mount nfsv3
create lv and format as ext3
One issue (maybe a bug):
After configuring ldap client and autofs, it works with “su – ldapuserXX”.
Remote directory can be mounted successfully, and pwd as “/netdir/ldapuserXX”
But if I logout from root account and login as ldapuserXX,
I got permission denied error.
Difficulty:
Update Kernel: download kernel from http://server/update/
The kernel rpm package name is not given!
“lftp server” goes to ftp anonymous directory.
It should be:
“lftp http://server/update/”
Or you can try “wget –spider”
Here, I workaround by using browser of the physical machine
and visit http://server/update/ and get the file name, then download with wget.
So the trick to list content of an http directory seems not a test objective 😀

The RHCE exam still worths it. It is of an order of magnitude more difficult than the RHCSA exam.
It will require you between three to six months of intensive lab preparation with a high risk of failure.
Don’t think too much about RHEL 8: a success to the RHCE 7 exam will be effective during 3 years whatever happens (and perhaps more if you pass some certificates of expertise).
Okay, will do train harder than before no matter what!
3-6 Months? Hmm, I hope Red Hat won’t retire the EX300 so soon until I become RHCE.
I don’t really have concern regarding RHEL 8, just EX300 is old. So, there’s probably a chance to retire EX300.
I thought Red Hat going to send me physical certificate. But, it turns out, they won’t. It’s okay no big deal.
