Great resource, it’s appreciated. Keep up the good work!

I am using certdepot.net as main source to study and practice for my RHCE exam (Rhel7). Checking updates every day. Great job! Its very helpful, I wish you all the best! Cant wait for the rest of RHCE objectives (manuals) 🙂 many thx

    Hi,

It is possible to provide guides on the bash script creation and bash profile setup? It is included in the RHCE exam as well. Thanks

    • CertDepot says:

      Hi,

There are a lot of websites on Internet where you can find this kind of information.
Also, look at the sections about RHEL 6 and RHEL 7 free resources of this website, you will find free beginner’s guides explaining this kind of subjects.

      Regards.

  4. jerky_rs says:

Apologies, there is no page for SMB kerberos yet.

I have setup a SMB kerberos environment as a Kerberos only Realm (without AD/LDAP as neither are part of objectives). However, I believe there is currently a bug in RHEL > 7.1 as per below (seems upstream fix was never incorporated into RHEL 4.1.x build)

    https://bugzilla.samba.org/show_bug.cgi?id=9581
    https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1179787

    Example config
    [global]
    workgroup = WORKGROUP
    realm = EXAMPLE.COM
    netbios name = PDC
server string = Samba Server Version %v
    security = ADS
    username map = /etc/samba/smbusers
    dedicated keytab file = /etc/krb5.keytab
    kerberos method = dedicated keytab
    passdb backend = tdbsam
    domain master = yes
    domain logons = yes
    preferred master = yes

To set this up you need to refer to the KDC server and client config docs on this site as pre-requisites. I add the following entry “cifs/server1.example.com” in KDC as well as one locally in /etc/krb5.keytab on the Samba server and Samba clients(same as NFS requirements). Supposedly you need to limit this to rc4-hmac “ktadmin:ktadd -e rc4-hmac:normal cifs/server1.example.com” (ref = https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Samba/Kerberos)

With log level 10 on server and using “smbclient -k -L //samba.example.com/” -d3 I get the same error as reported above in Bugzilla.

“obtaining PAC via GSSAPI gss_get_name_attribute failed”

As LDAP is not part of objectives or outline of RH300 (usually samba with security=ads uses ldap for lookups) I can only assume this is there objective (kerberos only realm) in combination with some group level parameters in the actual share. (although as above there is a bug for kerberos only realm in samba so I don’t really see how this could be part of the exam *currently* until 7.2 is released unless I am completely wrong about the objective)

    • CertDepot says:

According to some well informed sources, there wouldn’t be any Samba+Kerberos tasks in the current RHCE 7 exam until now.
As you mentioned it, this could be due to current implementation problems.
Thanks for this very useful comment.

I pulled the latest build out Centos GIT repo for samba (samba-4.1.12-21.el7). This was just made available today and a couple of other libraries were necessary to build the rpm from source/specs.

I can now successfully run the following from a client on the kerberized network against the kerberized samba server.

    # kinit user01
    # mount -t cifs -o sec=krb5 //centos7-test1.example.com/public /mnt/user01/

  6. abu3lia says:

    Hello,
I want to thank you for all you work here, it is very helpful for me.

I have a question: Are you going to add the following subjects soon?

    – Use network teaming or bonding to configure aggregated network links between two Red Hat Enterprise Linux systems,
    – Configure IPv6 addresses and perform basic IPv6 troubleshooting.

  7. abu3lia says:

Is that soon? sorry if I’m bothering you, but I am preparing for the RHCE exam soon, and I am reviewing all the objectives from you blog.

  8. keshara dorakumbura says:

For ‘mounting’ there may have many options. For RHCSA.v6 we used ‘autofs’ daemon. However, as with systemD introduced we have the luxury to do automounting with systemD by appending some options to /etc/fstab.

My Question is, is it allowed to do automounting with systemD options rather relying on ‘autofs’ daemon for RHCSA.v7?

  9. peterjuma says:

Great work CertDepot, back here for RHCE tutorials after completing my RHCSA exam successfully while using this site as my main guide.

  10. langtu1511 says:

    Hi,

I passed RHCE recently, I have used this website as a main resource. Thank you so so much!

I also read Asghar Ghori’s book. It’s a good book too.

My advice for exam is practice and understand each objective deeply. The exam was harder than I expected. I finished only 75%. It was the first time I take RedHat exam, so there was a lot of additional information to read and get familiar with. I don’t have much time to troubleshoot and verify. Just did as habit. Anyway it’s a great experience. It would be great if Certdepot has an article about Samba multiuser credential.

    Regards,

  11. amencke says:

    Hi there,
Is kerberized samba an objective of the RHCE? It is covered in Sander’s book, and it is listed as an objective here; but I do not see it listed objectives page:

    https://www.redhat.com/en/services/training/ex300-red-hat-certified-engineer-rhce-exam

    Cheers, Arthur

    • CertDepot says:

Kerberized Samba was originally a RHCE 7 objective but was withdrawn some time in the past.
As I don’t check the official Red Hat page about the RHCE 7 exam every day and as Red Hat officials don’t publicly advertise small changes in the RHCSA/RHCE curriculums, I didn’t remove this objective until today.
      Thanks for the comment.

  12. redsu says:

Hi, do you know which version of Red Hat 7 is on the EX300, 7.1 or 7.2?

  13. muhib says:

    hi… I am new here..
Can you solve this question regarding scripting…?
    a. Create a script on serverX called /root/createusers
    i. When this script is called with the testfile argument, it should add all the users from a saved file
ii. All users should have the login shell as /bin/false, password not required.
iii. When this script is called with any other arguments, it should print the message as “Input File Not Found”
iv. When this script is run without any arguments, it should display “Usage: /root/createusers”

    • CertDepot says:

You need to practice Bash programming.
$# tells you how many arguments are given
      $1, $2, $3 represent the various arguments
      echo “message” displays a message
To check the testfile argument is given, type:
      if [ $# -ne 1 ] || [ $1 != “testfile” ]; then
      echo “Input File Not Found”
      fi
You have to understand that to pass the RHCE exam, you need some serious skills.
Get a book about Bash and start practicing.
After some time, you should be able to write the required script in 15-20 minutes to give you an idea.

      • asifshabir says:

Through out the website, you have not discussed anything about shell scripting.
        1) what should we be expecting for scripting point of view during the exam.
        2) if you can not discuss in detail about scripting, I would request to please show us some man pages that can be helpful during the exam.
        3) Sander has discussed briefly about scripting in his video lectures. Do you advice that it should be enough for exam point of view?

        Thanks

        • CertDepot says:

You should be able to write small bash scripts with loops, tests and variable assignments. After, it is really difficult to say more.

        • Lisenet says:

To answer question #2, I find the man page for bash superb:

          $ man bash

It’s got bash compound commands (for, case, if, while etc), conditional expressions, shell builtin commands (break, continue, getopts, popd, pushd, read etc) and much more. You need to be familiar with the man page as it’s a long one, but extremely helpful during the exam.

        • Sam says:

In Addition to CertDepot and Lisenet, as Posted on this page, the Linux Document Project (tldp) is a good source of examples, and learning. The Man pages or info pages are good as a reference source only, and can be difficult to navigate.

          http://www.tldp.org/LDP/abs/html/

    • Sam says:

I would suggest you work through the examples at tldp.org The Advanced Bash programming.

I know it says Advanced but you have to start some where

Do the Examples. It is a good basic’s for learning
      http://www.tldp.org/LDP/abs/html/

The info file can sometimes be useful, but is very complicated. Handy for trying to work out what some random Function means.

I wrote to RedHat and asked if bonding was part of the RHCE exam objectives and they said yes. Please add bonding to your network examples.

  16. David_V says:

Sorry I meant bridging.. RedHat training verified for me that bridging is an exam requirement for RHCE 7

  17. pinguin7 says:

Hi!! Please, do you know if PAM and GPG is required on EX300 RHCE? Thanks a lot for your help

  18. umesh says:

Thanks CertDepot for posting the necessary details. I Passed the exam. It was little tough but good practice should make it easier to get the tasks done on time…scored 234…

  19. Lisenet says:

I’ve passed the exam with a score of 281/300. I’m sure I completed all the tasks that were required, but somehow managed to lose 19 points, madness.

The RHCE exam was fairly easy (not because I passed it, but because there was nothing particularly hard in it). 3.5 hours is plenty of time if you know the drill. I spent 2 hours configuring stuff, then half an hour for reboots and verification. Finished the exam with an hour to spare.

I would like to thank CertDepot for putting effort and sharing knowledge, it helped me a lot. Also, thanks everyone who commented on this site, some of these were truly invaluable insights.

    • CertDepot says:

      Congratulations for this great achievement!

    • chamambom says:

Managed to book the exam last friday 23rd september and unfortunately failed… The exam is still on RHEL v7.0 and the version wasn’t an issue for me. What affected me the most is time, I took most of my time on the easy parts and when I moved to some questions like apache and samba, stuff didn’t go down well for me and I think for the first time in my life, I had a brain freeze seeing how time was moving when I had attended half the questions…………………. The exam is not difficult but tricky and time is supposed to be managed…

      • CertDepot says:

Time is definitely the most difficult issue and you never know how long it will take when things go wrong.
Thanks a lot for this feedback.

      • Lisenet says:

Practice is the key here. Once you see a question, you need to know how to do it. If you start looking for information, then things usually don’t work well and time runs out quickly. I’m sure you will pass it the next time. Try harder! 🙂

  20. icehac says:

Took the test…and VM2 (the one responsible for mounting) completely went blank after reboot. (I believe samba mounting was the culprit, but couldn’t verify). The only thing I can think of is the fact that I didn’t use _netdev on samba or nfs, only scsi. The fact that there wasn’t a lot to do on VM2 had me a bit stumped. Any suggestions / has anyone ran into this?

  21. bazouie says:

    Hi guys,
I want to enroll for RHCE but, I am not too sure which one is better: Class room or Individual ? I took the RHCSA on individual (Kiosk), but I don’t have any idea about class room !!! Please help me to choose the best choice.
    Thanks,
    Abe

    • CertDepot says:

Many people who chose the kiosk exam, regret it because of technical problems, lack of answer from a proctor, etc.
If you don’t know, choose the classroom exam.

      • bazouie says:

Thanks for your answer and your very helpful website! I have one more question: In scripting part, I notice all RHCE question samples are written with “case” instead of “if”. I know they are the same, but is there any limitation to choose them. I asked because I am more comfortable with “if statement”. So can I use that instead of “case” ????
        Thank you

  22. bazouie says:

    Hi Guys,
I have doubts about the below question’s answer. Any idea?
    ———————————————————————————–
Create a script named /usr/local/bin/backup.sh that takes a directory as an argument and backs up all files in that directory in a tar-gzipped archive in the current directory. If no argument is specified, the script should display the following error message:
    Usage: backup.sh
    ———————————————————————————–

    Thanks,

  23. bazouie says:

    Hi Guys,
I need urgent answer. I had schedule for RHCE exam on middle of November in Dallas. I received an email from Redhat training regarding to exam cancellation. They offer me Kiosk or reschedule to other time. I have heard from some of you that saying Kiosk has some bugs. I guess that is my only choice. What should I do ? I need to get back to them so please answer me ASAP.

    Thank you,
    Abe

    • Lisenet says:

I never took a Kiosk exam, so cannot tell much, but I’d reschedule to other time.

    • Sam says:

This happened me, I booked but didnt pay.

I re-booked a different location and Different Date.

However I could not cancel there was a bug in the software. the system was eventually canced.

I stayed away from the Kiosk as I didnt know or understand a lot about it as I was spending my own cash.

      • Lisenet says:

I think it’s extremelly important to pick a reputable training provider to book your exam (if at all possible, depends on where you live in really).

We have a company called “QA Limited” in the UK (no advertisement intended), they allow you to reschedule exams free of charge (some advance notice is required) and are quite helpful in general. I used their services to book all my RedHat exams (not training).

  24. jeromeza says:

For the DNS questions do I HAVE to use BIND or can I use something like PowerDNS?

    • CertDepot says:

It seems that the available options are Bind and Unbound.

      • jeromeza says:

Hmmm, thanks – guess I’ll have to learn one of them then. I’m assuming the reason we can’t use others is that we’re only given a private YUM repo with no access to any external repo’s?

        • Lisenet says:

You can use any software that you find available during the exam, meaning that if you find PowerDNS available to configure DNS-related questions, you can freely use it. RHCE is performance based, doesn’t really matter which tool you up until you configure it properly to answer that DNS question. Hope that helps.

  25. KP says:

Very great resource. I’ve been on this site so many times. Not sure how I missed this. Thanks you for the effort.

  26. KP says:

Does anyone know the current RHEL version the exam is running on? 7.0 / 7.1 / 7.2 ?

    • CertDepot says:

You can assume RHEL 7.0 is the version that will be used at the exam.

    • devops says:

I asked the same question to Redhat certification team; following is the reply, but better prepared for 7.0 as well….just in case.

“The major version of OS is important in terms of certification prospective.
Based on the better hardware support and updates, we may use latest version.
To be very specific, we started using RHEL 7.2 in exams.”

      • CertDepot says:

You have to be prepared for 7.0 and know the little differences appearing in 7.1 and 7.2.
Four months ago, I got the following exchange via Twitter with Randy Russel, Head of certification at Red Hat.
        CertDepot>
“2 wks ago I asked RH UK which version of RHEL7 was used for RHCSA/RHCE: they said 7.1. Today 5 guys reported 7.0. Can you clarify?”
        Randy Russel>
“The major release is what matters. We update dot releases and sometimes support more than one dot release concurrently.”
        CertDepot>
“NFS cl/srv & LDAP cl conf procs are different according to minor versions. It’s a fact. Knowing the minor version used is required.”
        Randy Russel>
“No, what’s required is knowing underlying principles rather than rote memorization. Dot releases are part of the job.”

    • bsteiner36 says:

I took the exam 3 days ago April 28th 2017 and it was over 7.0. I am in the United States for your information.

  27. samuel.sappa says:

    Hi CertDepot,
In KVM docs site they state RHEL it’s seems not supported
    http://www.linux-kvm.org/page/Guest_Support_Status#RedHat_Enterprise_Linux

but in exam it’s seems Redhat using KVM (Maybe I’m wrong) All this time for preparing for exam I’m using VirtualBox but some command behave differently.

can you share for the rest of us what kind of “lab environment” your using when creating tutorial for this website

    Thank you for your info

  28. popo says:

Thanks for the site. I passed RHCE exam with score of 281. It took me around 3 hours and the exam version was 7.2. It’s better to be prepared for all versions. I studied from Sander Van Vugt’s guide and his videos along with some extra lessons from this site. Thanks again!

  29. KP says:

Nailed the RHCE in part thanks to the materials on this site.
    Awesome!!!!!

Anyone have any links to Ansible books/materials? 🙂

  30. blahblah says:

How big of a jump is the RHCE from the RHCSA? I have heard the LFCE is easier than the RHCE?
Seems like RHCSA is more naturally memorable, simply due to it being based more on linux fundamentals, so all the commands have been used far more frequently, by everyone.
Various of these RHCE objectives I have already done, but nowhere near enough times to memorize them quickly.

    • CertDepot says:

I think RHCE objectives are more technically challenging (Kerberos+NFS, bonding/teaming, iSCSI, Samba, etc) and you get a very serious time constraint that doesn’t allow you to make many mistakes …

  31. fdvalero says:

    Hello my friends

As many of you know, I’ve doing a few videos about RHCE general objectives and one practice exam in order to help you in the preparation for this exam. All this videos are in my youtube channel.

Today (March 28th), I did the exam. My first impression of the exam was it is hard, but after you read all the instructions you will notice that you are right, is very hard. The key is practice all the topics from the red had website.
    https://www.redhat.com/en/services/training/ex300-red-hat-certified-engineer-rhce-exam

After a few minutes I realized all that need to do in order to get all the points.
First you need to focus on the easy points, this kind of questions give you a confident to continue, because you still nervous at this point. Then, do NOT try to be smart doing things through the terminal when you already know very well how to do it using the GUI. Red Hat do not look how you do it, they look for the final result.

Also is very important to reboot your station every time that you think is necessary, or after a big change, because if the station do not boot unattended you will get score of 0. But on my personal experience, you only need to reboot two or three times.
Do not waste time in question where you need to read man pages, this is unnecessary if you practice. Remember, practice is the key.

More common errors are typos in the name of the users, servers, url; etc. So, this mean that you need to read very well, example: user harry or user hary. Is very easy to make this error.
The time is very important, because all the configurations, you need to verify it on the client side.

The good resources for your preparation are the books from: Asghar Ghori, Sander van Vugt and Michael Jang. Those books provide multiples lab and practice exams at the end of the book. And yes, are more difficult than the exam.

Another key point that can help you is if you are currently working with Red Hat product, either CentOS or Fedora. This is a plus, also if you are already on a Linux Administrator position.

You can follow me on this page, or you can join me in a WhatsApp group, and also participate on the live meetings that I schedule frequently.

    • Lisenet says:

I think that labelling the exam as “hard” or “easy” is subject to your personal experience. All that you said is generally true, but I’m sure you’ll find people who thought the exam wasn’t hard (myself included).

I wouldn’t call “reading man pages” a waste of time. I read man pages several times while taking the exam. The key thing here is to know what you are looking for, and where to find it. For example, the whole network teaming config is provided in a man page, all you need to do is to open it, copy and paste. As a sysadmin, you don’t have to memorise everything, you need to know where to find information. That’s the whole point of having man pages.

      • Pat says:

on Copy and Paste, is it easy to copy and paste on the exam vm terminal or you need to do an ssh? How do you do your copy and paste? Would you please elaborate on that one a little bit? I tried xterm and couldn’t easily copy.

        • eduardoherce@hotmail.com says:

Hi Pat, I opened an (or two) SSH console to both VMs and then I could.
In KVM console you can’t (or at least I don’t know how)

        • Lisenet says:

This question gets asked quite often, there are several answers on this website already. I recommend to use xterm.

          • Pat says:

Thanks for your answer! but how do you copy and paste on xterm? select the text and use the right mouse click to copy don’t seem to work. Also a shift-control-c is also not working. So what works? please tell me

    • slavonic says:

Please could you provide the link for the life meetings? What kind of live meeting is it? Thanks

  32. jeromeza says:

  35. Sultan says:

    Hi CertDepot
I have noticed that ftp server is neither included in RHCSA objectives not in RHCE objectives and also I have not seen it here.
However, on Red Hate website under “Skills” required for RHCE (https://www.redhat.com/en/services/certification/rhce), configuration of FTP server is mentioned along with others as below.

    ——————————————————-
Configuring a system to provide networking services, including HTTP/HTTPS, File Transfer Protocol (FTP), network file system (NFS), server message block (SMB), Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP), secure shell (SSH) and Network Time Protocol (NTP).
    ——————————————————-

Can you please let me know whether it is required for RHCE exam or not?

    • CertDepot says:

Your remark is very interesting. As you wrote, FTP skills are never mentioned in the RHCE 7 or RHCSA 7 objectives. As they were part of the RHCE 6 objectives, we can suppose that not everybody is aware of the change, the author of the page that you specified included!
However, without spending too much time on it, it’s always a good idea to practice at least once the installation of a FTP server on RHEL 7. I will think about adding a tutorial on this topic.

  36. scruff says:

    Hi everybody.
Does anyone have some information regarding the servers LAN connections (network scheme or diagram) on the RHCE exam?

  37. scruff says:

Hello everybody. Several months ago I passed my EX200 (RHCSA) exam. I’ve got a confirmation on my e-mail. Therefore I have a question regarding EX300 (RHCE) pre-exam issue. What data should I provide to proctor before passing RHCE exam? Is it enough to give him my Name/Surname and e-mail address, that I provided at EX200 earlier?

    • CertDepot says:

I don’t think you need to provide any data except an identity card that proves who you are.
Taking the RHCE exam doesn’t require passing the RHCSA or any other exams.

    • Sultan says:

As per my understanding, RHCE certificate will only be issued if you have passed both RHCE and RHCSA exams. You can take RHCE exam without passing RHCSA but certificate will not be issued until you show that you have RHCSA passed. Therefore, before the exam you will be asked to provide your certificate number of RHCSA and photo ID.

    • Lisenet says:

You must be registered with Red Hat in order to take an exam nowadays. To sit EX300 you will be asked to provide your Red Hat ID, which will show that you have already passed EX200.

  38. ehuizar1028 says:

I took this exam back in May, but i failed. Does anyone know how much more different the questions will be?

  39. Mike_ says:

Well, I took this test today and I failed. My first failure! The test would not be considered difficult for most, but all the specific options overwhelmed me and I ran out of time.

I think to see the test in person, made me understand that you not only need to know how to accomplish the tasks but all the possible options that could be asked for each service.

I’ve been studying off and on for a year, sometimes acutely, sometimes not so much, but I thought I had a pretty good grasp on it. Not really. I had a voucher that I paid for and it was about to expire, I bought two vouchers at the same time, so I took the test with a feeling that I was 70% ready. However, there is not enough time to hunt, read, find examples, configure, make active, enable, firewall, test, etc. I really believe you really need to know setups of services or configurations cold.

    I scored a 106/300.

Will try again in a month or two, after a lot more practicing.

Thanks to this site, Lisenet, and Rootusers, as Sander Van Vugt.

Interesting feedback. Thanks and good luck for your next attempt.

    • Lisenet says:

Agreed, you really need to know what you’re doing, as simply memorising commands is not going to cut it. RHEL OS comes with many useful docs and config examples, the key thing is to know where to find them without actually spending time on it.

An example would be teaming, I can set it up in several minutes by using /usr/share/doc/teamd-1.9/example_configs/loadbalance_1.conf. What you must know is the place where the config is located. If you know there is a config somewhere but you have never used it, you’ll waste time while searching for it. For RHCE it has to be pretty much automatic – copy the config, edit as required, deploy, test.

      • Mike_ says:

Agreed, but sometimes that wasn’t cutting it either. For example, to install teamd faster I just went to the usr/share/doc/team*/examples_ifcfg/1/ made edits to the files as needed, then copied to /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/, performed nmcli con reload, the started each slave and team. Super fast, but then realized I didn’t like names. Reconfigured. Then I forgot to knock out dhcp. Reconfigured. Forgot onboot=yes. Reconfigured. Then they didn’t start right. Restarted network. What could go wrong for me was going wrong. Haste makes waste!

I plan on spending another month relearning and removing inefficiencies. Then re-attempt.

    • Sam says:

Sorry to here that. I have gone through that before. In addition I would suggest two other points: know how to troubleshoot (ie typos, mmisconfigurations, variations in objectives, etc), and take a note of time management. Go through all the objectives within the given time.

      • Mike_ says:

        Sam,

Thank you. I agree, I have begun to break down how long each task should take in an effort to better understand situations I am in, how long to complete, troubleshooot. There are some low hanging fruit I should have tackled to quickly complete.

It’s a little more complicated at times, but you can often look too deep into something that does not require it. Practice is key.

        Thank you,

        Mike_

        • Sam says:

I agree, looking too deeply can be hit and miss. Try the implementation on different versions of centos (ie 7.0, and 7.2). This can throw up different and interesting problems.

I passed my RHCE (270/300) yesterday 1 Dec 2017. Many thanks to this site as it was one of my sources.

  41. bankai says:

My question to all. When I passed my RHCSA I did not do any NMCLI. I did manual editing and old school service network restart.

Can I do the same in RHCE? for example for TEAMING? Can I do the bonding instead? Can I skip the nmcli? Can I just do this instead for ifcfg.bond0

    MASTER=yes

    ifcfg.eth0
    slave=yes
    master=ifcfg.bond0

Would that work? I am kinda old. I think learning NMCLI is against my heart. I will learn some other stuff instead of learning nmcli.

    • CertDepot says:

As the exam evaluation is only about the result and not how you got it, I think you can perfectly edit the configuration files manually.

      • bankai says:

Also I know how to do to create a VHOST. Thanks for your tutorial but is that all? That’s all we need in the exam? After elink will verify your host is up, then you will earn the points in the exam? or many many more things to do?

        • Lisenet says:

Creating a virtual host is one of the objectives, you also need to know how to configure access restrictions, deploy a CGI application, configure TLS security etc.

  42. ursabear333 says:

In the exam, do we need to create a new HOST? VM? Is virtualization included?

What happen if they gave you 2 servers, and you broke the other server?

In RHCSA you only have 1 client machine and you don’t have access to any other one.

But what about in RHCE? If you break the VM what happens then? You need to reinstall it? How about the config?

    • Sam says:

This comes close to a NDA, but as in real life, if you have to rebuild a VM/server, you loose all your settings! You waste time. The solution is to know exactly what you are doing, and double check the critical items.

  43. JamesM says:

I have two unrelated questions. While studying for the RHCE exam, I configured an LVM to use during the iSCSI portion with the following commands:
    fdisk /dev/vdb
    pvcreate /dev/vdb1
    vgcreate rhel /dev/vdb1
    lvcreate –L 100m –n iscsi rhel

When I tried to create the iSCSI storage (/backstores/block/ create iscsi_store /dev/rhel/iscsi), I got this error: volume already in use. Since I had not formatted the LV yet (mkfs.ext4), why am I seeing this error? How can I resolve it and proceed with the iSCSI steps?

The other issue I ran into is that one of my vm’s rebooted to a #dracut prompt. I had never seen this before. The output on the screen said that root and swap could not be found. Is there an easy fix for this? Does some file need to be edited or rebuilt to get the boot process back to normal?

I would appreciate any help on these!

    • Sam says:

Were both these issues on the same VM. A quick bit or reading on the dracut, gives this impression that this may be the case. What other steps have you tried?

      • JamesM says:

Well I was using the Vagrant/Centos setup linked to somewhere else withing the CertDepot site. I destroyed the vm’s and rebuilt them, to get past the dracut issue. As for the iscsi issue, it seems that I had been trying /dev/sdb1 for the blockstore target, but it worked when I tried /dev/rhel/iscsi (my initial post stated this incorrectly). I was able to get the target configured (best I can tell).

I am now seeing an issue where, on the initiator, when I try to start the iscsi service it complains about triggers not being met. The only thing I have done on the initiator is install iscsi-initiator-utils and edit the initiatorname file. The service doesn’t output an error, but I see the “triggers not met” error when I check the status. I would appreciate some guidance on this.

Can someone recommend an exam taking facility in the UK.

Lisenet recommended taking exams through qa.com if one is in UK in the past. However, they don’t seem to offer “exam-only” anymore.
Also recommended is doing only classroom based exams and not kiosk. However, since the next date after 26th Jan is in March, I might have to go via kiosk as I need to take the RHCE in Feb. Tried every city in UK on RedHat website. No classroom tests in Feb anywhere! Wow!

    • Sam says:

I looked at the Exam timetable on the Red Hat website. There have been bad reports on the kiosk method which I have not taken. Consider other countries, but make sure the exam is in English (for the keyboard layout). Dublin and Brussels are not too far and have exams in Feb.

  45. ursabear333 says:

    Hi Certdepot,
The sample exam for rhcsa is helpful. How about a sample exam for RHCE?
    Thank you

Great blog, it’s helped me a lot.

I’d like to share with all of you my bad experience with Kiosk exams and discourage doing Redhat exams with it.

I’ve been RHCE for the last 3 years and it was time for my renewal. Due to lack of available dates, I had to take the exam in the Kiosk mode.

My problems started during the exam. Once I had all the questions completed, I rebooted both VMs and my surprise was that one of the VMs didn’t boot, and showed a blank screen and didn’t even reach the BIOS or the grub. I was pretty sure I didn’t mess with the boot (I’ve a lot of experience with Redhat systems) but as I had enough time I reinstalled the server and started over. When I completed the questions again the issue reproduced and I failed my exam (with zero explanations from Redhat even I complained).

I accepted my failure and tested again. Redhat provided more details in the new exam and I was reported 21/23 items correct and still didn’t pass o_O.

When I asked Redhat for explanations, they argued that one of the VMs needed intervention to boot and for that I lost some items (just enough to not pass? Seriously?).

Indeed, the same VM of the first exam had the same issues at boot. When I reboot the VM from within the OS (I’m old fashioned know, but I use the “reboot” command), the VM won’t boot and a blank screen showed up again.

If I powered off the VM and start up, it starts fine with no errors of any type (WTF?).

I reported it to Redhat but still have no positive repsonse and due to this I have lost my certification (expired yesterday).

I wanted to share my really bad experience with you and warn you that Redhat Kiosk exams are shit, specially the support from the training team, they always blame you.

    Edu.

Been wondering why there is no link for this
Configure your machine to be a router.
Route IP traffic and create static routes.

  48. ursabear333 says:

When you say basic authentication in iscsi target, is this the default? like you don’t need to enter the command below?

    # set auth userid=chapuser
    # set auth password=chappassword

  49. ursabear333 says:

Can someone please agree with me on configuring teamd network teaming, bonding? Can we just do the config file and not the cli? Or you all do the nmcli command?

    • Lisenet says:

This is from RedHat documentation, in RHEL 7, when you edit an ifcfg file, NetworkManager is not automatically aware of the change and has to be prompted to notice the change. If you use one of the tools to update NetworkManager profile settings, then it does not implement those changes until you reconnect using that profile. Having said that, you are free to choose to edit the files if you wish, but you may find nmcli better for the job.

I would just like to thank you for your excellent site and your support for all the comments here.
I just passed the RHCE with 271 points which is something I didn’t think I could do but this site and Tomas’ (https://www.lisenet.com/rhce/) made it possible.
    Thanks to you both.

    Hello,

Until now I was preparing RHCE on RH 7.3+, can you please tell me, regarding the exam, what are the differences with version 7.0 (exam version) that I need to be aware of ?

    Thanks

  52. ursabear333 says:

Is it safe to say, first thing you arrive in the exam center.
    Install all of this

    1. iscsi-initiator targetcli postfix nfs httpd samba? Please add if anything that I miss.

    2. Based on all the objectives, please advise what do you prefer to do first? on my part for sure it is the kerberos nfs.
